Successful completion of an approved initial rating course.  Unit training not commenced in that rating within 6 months of the completion of the course.  At an ATC training centre or ATC unit approved to conduct APCs. 
Rating not valid.  More than 4 years since the rating was used to provide an ATC service.  At an ATC training centre or an ATC unit approved to conduct APCs. 
Rating endorsement not valid.  More than 4 years since the rating endorsement was used to provide an ATC service.  At an ATC training centre or an ATC unit approved to conduct APCs. 
Assessment for previous competence required by the CAA.  At an ATC training centre. 

17.10 Medical Certification
You must not provide an Air Traffic Control service unless you hold a current medical certificate of the appropriate class. If you are below the age of 40 you only need a medical every two years; if you are 40 or over the medical is annual.
You must inform the CAA Medical Department if you are pregnant or if you have suffered any illness or injury which will involve your not being fit for a consecutive period of 20 days or more.

18 Varying an ATC Licence
18.1 Removal from Operational Duty
If you are involved in an ATC incident or an aircraft accident there are procedures for removing you from duty to ensure you have sufficient time to recover from any stress. This period also gives the unit management or the CAA time to assess your role in the incident.
Although controllers may consider themselves unaffected by an incident, experience has shown that controllers who remain on duty following an incident have an increased risk of having another incident.

18.2 Provisional Suspension of a Licence
If the management assessment, or the CAA's initial investigation, indicates that you bore some responsibility for the incident, the CAA will provisionally suspend one or more of your ratings, rating endorsements or unit endorsements.
Removal of the provisional suspension requires you to meet conditions set by the CAA; these will normally be a period of training followed by an assessment of competence.
The provisional suspension allows time for the CAA to undertake additional investigations if these are required. During the period of the provisional suspension a controller may only provide an ATC service, in respect of those ratings, rating endorsements or unit endorsements that have been provisionally suspended, under the supervision of an OJTI.
There is no appeal against a provisional suspension.

18.3 Suspension
If you cannot meet the conditions for the removal of the provisional suspension, the CAA will move to suspend your rating, rating endorsement or unit endorsement and will set conditions for the suspension to be removed. At the same time it will offer you an Appeal against the suspension under Regulation 6 of the CAA Regulations.
If your appeal fails the CAA will suspend your licence. However, if your appeal is successful, no action will be taken in respect of your licence qualifications.

18.4 Revocation
In exceptional circumstances the CAA may revoke a rating, rating endorsement or the ATC licence.

18.5 Psychoactive Substance Abuse
It is extremely important that controllers do not provide an operational Air Traffic Control service while under the influence of any psychoactive substance. The law already prohibits controllers from providing a service while under the influence of drink or drugs, but medicines either prescribed or bought over the counter may affect your ability to provide a safe Air Traffic Control service. If you are in any doubt you should ask for advice from the CAA's Medical Department.
