Cruise flight levels were assumed to be constant between the end of the climb phase (departure phase) and the beginning of the descent phase (arrival phase). Using the combination of these three graphs, a flight level and a speed can be allocated to a waypoint along the trajectory between a city-pair based on the Great Circle distance flown from the airport of departure to the waypoint location. From the speed, the progressive distance and the departure time, an event-time can be allocated to each position.
.  Methodology to derive maximum flight level and ground speed profiles for a common aircraft type
For each common aircraft type, a maximum flight level and ground speed profile was
created as shown in Figure 19.

First, for a particular aircraft type, each flight was selected from ETMS data and the
following information was extracted:
Aircraft type (Traffic table).
Traffic ID (Traffic and Flight tables, joined field).

 


Flight total distance (Traffic table). Highest flight level (Flight table). Fastest ground speed (Flight table).

Then the information was treated such as all flights were grouped into flight distance categories of 50 nm. For each category an average maximum flight level, an average maximum ground speed and the number of flights belonging to the category were calculated (Table 35). The reporting of these data to a graph gives Figure 19. The trendline for the maximum flight and the ground speed was then drawn on the graph. It can be noticed that on short distances aircraft fly at a lower level than the optimum cruise flight level. For each aircraft there is a minimum distance threshold above which, the aircraft will fly at an optimum cruise flight level and speed. Below this threshold the cruise flight level and speed are a function of the flight distance.

.  Methodology to derive the flight level and ground speed for a common aircraft type when departing
For each common aircraft type, the flight level and ground speed profile was created for
departure as shown in Figure 20.

categories of 10 nm. For each category an average flight level, an average ground speed
and the number of flights belonging to the category were calculated (Table 36). Separate
graphs were created for the different flight ranges (e.g. 0 to 200 nm, 200 to 500 nm, 500
to 1000 nm, 1000 plus nm) as shown in Figure 20, Figure 21, Figure 22 and Figure 23.
The assumption is made that for an aircraft type the profile for a short flight might be
different than that for a long flight. The trendline for the flight level and the ground speed is
then drawn on the graph.
