(iii) With theword ”open”inredletters1inchhigh,placedhorizontally near the head of the arrow.

Each emergency exit that is required to be openable from the outside, and its means of opening, mustbe marked on the outside ofthe airplane.In addition, thefollowing apply :

The outside marking for each passenger emergency exit in the side of the fuselage must include a 2-inch colored band outlining the exit.
(2)
Each outside marking including the band, must have color contrast to be rea-dily distinguishable from the surrounding fuselage surface. The contrast must be such thatif the re.ectance of thedarkercoloris15percent orless,the re-.ectanceof thelightercolormustbeatleast45percent. ”Re.ectance” isthe ratio of the luminous .ux re.ected by a body to the luminous .ux it receives. Whenthe re.ectance of thedarkercolorisgreaterthan15percent, atleast a 30-percent di.erence between its re.ectance and the re.ectance of the lighter color must be provided.

In the case of exits other than those in the side of the fuselage, such as ven-tral or tailcone exits, the external means of opening, including instructions if applicable, must be conspicuously marked in red, or bright chrome yellow if the background color is such that red is inconspicuous. When the opening means is located on only one side of the fuselage, a conspicuous marking to that e.ect must be provided on the other side.

Each signrequiredbyparagraph(d) ofthissectionmay usetheword ”exit” inits legend in place of the term ”emergency exit”.

FAR 25.812 : Emergency lighting.
(a) An emergency lighting system, independent of the main lighting system, must be installed. However, the sources of general cabin illumination may be common to both the emergency and the main lighting systems if the power supply to the emergencylighting systemisindependent of thepowersupply tothe mainlighting system. The emergency lighting system must include :

Illuminatedemergency exit marking andlocating signs, sources ofgeneral cabin illumination, interior lighting in emergency exit areas, and .oor proximity escape path marking.
(2)
Exterior emergency lighting.
(b) Emergency exit signs–
(1) For airplanes thathave apassenger seatingcon.guration, excludingpilot seats, of 10 seats or more must meet the following requirements :
