INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS AND
RECOMMENDED PRACTICES
CHAPTER 1. DEFINITIONS
Note 1.- Air! references to "Radio Regulations" are to the
Radio Regulations publislzed by the International Telecommunication
Union (ITU). Radio Regulations are amended from
time to time by the decisions embodied in the Final Acts of
World Radiocommunication Conferences held normally ever;v

as they relate to aeronautical radio system frequency use is
contained in the Handbook on Radio Frequency Spectrum

approved ICAO policies (Doc 9718).
Note 2.- This Part of Annex I0 includes Standards and
Aircraft earth station (AES). A mobile earth station in the
aeronautical mobile-satellite service located on board an
aircraft (see also "GES").
Bit error rate (BER). The number of bit errors in a sample
divided by the total number of bits in the sample, generally
averaged over many such samples.
Carrier-to-multipath ratio (C/M). The ratio of the carrier
power received directly, i.e. without reflection, to the
multipath power, i.e. carrier power received via reflection.

Channel rule. The rate at which bits are transmitted over the
RF channel. These bits include those bits used for framing
and error correction, as well as the information bits. For
burst transmission, the channel rate refers to the
instantaneous burst rate over the period of the burst.
Channel rnte accuracy. This is relative accuracy of the clock
to which the transmitted channel bits ale synchronized. For
example, at a channel ratc of 1.2 kbitsls, maximum error of
one part in lo6 imS l ies the maximum allowed error in the clock is 21.2 x 10- Hz.
