should be available. Before initiating
the go-around, the Training Captain
should ensure that landing flap (if
used) has been converted to take-off,
that the handling pilot has been
advised of its position, and that in all
other respects the aircraft is fit to get
airborne again. The aircraft should
be positively climbing before being
fully cleaned up.
Training & Testing 319
The aircraft should also be stopped
before reconfiguration takes place,
and the Training Captain should
ensure reconfiguration before giving
further instructions.
If a rejected takeoff is intended, the
Training Captain should simply state
the problem, such as falling oil
pressure and await events, similarly
with a fire in-flight before a practice
forced landing. With an engine fire
after takeoff, the Training Captain
should, at a safe height, slowly close
the throttle to the idle position and
advise the handling pilot to restore
power as soon as the emergency
touch drills have been completed.
For depressurisation training a slow
method of cabin pressure reduction
should be used and aircraft should
not be depressurised at an altitude
greater than 15000 ft (neither should
an aircraft be depressurised when
undergoing emergency descent).
Simulated Flight Conditions
If your Company is lucky enough to
own one, a Flight Sim may be used
for Instrument Rating renewals and
Instrument Approach Proficiency
Checks provided that it has been
approved for that purpose by the
CAA. Simulators and procedure
trainers may be used at other times
for training purposes. Simulation of
IF conditions in VMC for training
and testing purposes will need
screens or other approved apparatus.
Visors are acceptable, provided the
lower windows are whited out. A
competent observer with a full field
of vision must also be carried. Don't
forget to tell ATC what's going on.
On Becoming An Examiner
A TRE (in UK, anyway) is appointed
for a three year period and can only
hold the appointment through a
Company, so if your company goes
out of business, so do you, as a TRE
anyway, unless you move sharply
sideways to another. The application
is made to the CAA, together with
the usual CLM (Cheque for Lots of
Money), and you are expected to
undergo a training course before the
appointed examiner comes to check
you out. The problem is that there’s
no syllabus; that’s down to the
Company concerned, so here follows
an idea of the process in case they
leave you on your own, like me.
You are expected to conduct a
complete examination, from briefing
the candidate and examining
documents, to sitting in the aircraft
and ensuring competency to fly and
signing up the forms afterwards.
When you do your test, you should
have a letter from the CAA,
including instructions for TREs, and
evidence of training. The
requirements vary according to the
type of aircraft you will be testing on
and the type of Company you will be
working for, but should not
realistically be less than a week,
containing at least 4-5 hours’ flying.
You will be examined on:
· Licence privileges, the C of T/C
of E, what to look for in a
licence and what they cover.
· Base and Line Check
requirements; frequency and
validity.
· Medical frequency and validity,
ages to fly commercially.
320 Operational Flying
· Recency (Schedule 8).
· The need for licensed airfields.
· Who can instruct and where.
· The ANO with regard to flying
instruction.
· Status of various documents.
· Performance and ANGRs.
· Rules of the Air, especially 5, 6,
25 and 26.
· Where to find information about
the above.
Preliminaries
Tests must be conducted in
accordance with the Operations
Manual if the test is for an AOC, or
the Flying Order Book if for a PPL
holder. The candidate must be told
to ask questions if unsure about
what’s going on, which implies that
one of the unwritten qualities of a
TRE is the ability to put people at
their ease—questions won't be asked
if you give the impression that
they're unwelcome. Remember that
you are examining somebody so that
they can pass a test, not to stop them
passing it. In fact, your service
should also include being on time,
polite and respectful, well organised
