2.13.1.1 OBOGS Monitor. The CRU-99/A solid state oxygen monitor, located on the seat bulkhead
in the front cockpit, continuously monitors oxygen concentration and initiates the OBOGS DEGD
caution in the event of system failure. The monitor performs a power-up BIT during a 2 minute
warm-up period and periodic BIT on 60-second intervals during normal operation. No indication of
power-up or periodic BIT is provided if both tests are passed. The monitor incorporates two methods
to conduct the preflight BIT check, the OBOGS monitor pneumatic BIT plunger and the OBOGS
electronic BIT button. Refer to figure 2-31. Pressing in and holding the OBOGS monitor pneumatic
BIT plunger for 15 to 65 seconds tests the operation of the OBOGS monitor by diverting cabin air into
the monitor to create a low oxygen concentration condition. Momentarily pressing and releasing the
OBOGS monitor pneumatic BIT plunger and the OBOGS electronic BIT button, BIT checks the
concentrator electronics. Successful completion of either test results in positive feedback to the

aircrew, via the activation of the OBOGS DEGD caution and verifies the function of the entire caution
system. The OBOGS DEGD goes away within 15 seconds.
· With emergency oxygen selected, both the OXY FLOW knob and
OBOGS control switch should be placed to OFF. If not secured,
OBOGS system pressure may prevent emergency oxygen from reaching
the breathing regulator, resulting in the delivery of unconsecrated
air.
· Good flow does not equate to good oxygen concentration. An OBOGS
DEGD caution indicates that the oxygen concentration is inadequate,
and hypoxia may result.

2.13.1.1.1 OBOGS DEGD Caution. An OBOGS DEGD caution is displayed when the oxygen
concentration inside the OBOGS monitor is below an acceptable level. The brief appearance of the
OBOGS DEGD caution during OBOGS warm up is normal.
NOTE
Taking the oxygen mask off without placing the OXY flow knob to
OFF may result in an OBOGS DEGD caution. The unlimited flow
from the mask can overwhelm the OBOGS system capacity and result
in a low concentration condition.
2.13.1.2 Oxygen Breathing Regulator. The aircrew torso mounted oxygen breathing regulator
delivers oxygen to the aircrew at positive pressure, the limits of which increase with altitude. It is
designed to interface with the hose assembly which connects with the seat survival kit oxygen
disconnect.
2.13.1.3 OBOGS Control Switch. The OBOGS control switch, located on the aft left console, is used
to control electrical power to the OBOGS concentrator and the inlet air shutoff valve. With the switch
in the ON position, the inlet air shutoff valve opens providing ECS air to the concentrator, which in
turn begins to produce oxygen.
ON Supplies electrical power and airflow to the OBOGS concentrator.
OFF OBOGS system off.
2.13.1.4 OXY FLOW Knob. The OXY FLOW knob, located on the aft left console in both cockpits, is
used to control the supply of OBOGS generated oxygen to each aircrew's oxygen mask.
ON OBOGS flow supplied to the mask.
OFF OBOGS flow secured.
It is possible to place the OXY FLOW knob in an intermediate position
between the ON and OFF detents, which may result in a reduced
flow of oxygen. The OXY FLOW knob should always be fully rotated
to the ON or OFF detent position.
2.13.2 Emergency Oxygen. An approximately 10-20 minute supply (depending on altitude) of
gaseous oxygen is contained in a bottle in the survival kit. It is connected into the OBOGS supply hose
as it passes through the kit. A pressure gauge is visible on the inside left front of the survival kit. The
emergency oxygen supply is activated automatically upon ejection. The emergency oxygen supply may
be activated manually by pulling the emergency oxygen green ring on the outside of the left thigh. The
emergency oxygen supply may be deactivated at aircrew discretion by pushing down on the release tab
immediately forward of the green ring.

2.14 FIRE DETECTION, FIRE EXTINGUISHING, AND BLEED AIR LEAK DETECTION SYSTEMS
The fire detection system contains dual-loop fire detectors and three FIRE warning lights. The fire
extinguishing system contains a READY/DISCH light and a fire extinguisher bottle. The two systems
provide engine bay, AMAD bay, and APU bay fire warning, engine and APU emergency shutdown, and
selective fire extinguishing capability. The fire extinguisher bottle is located in the aft fuselage
between the engines. The bottle contains a nontoxic gaseous agent which provides a one-shot
extinguishing capability.
