[For pressurizedairplanes,] the ventilating air in the .ightcrew and passenger com-partments mustbe free of harmfulorhazardous concentrations ofgases and vapors in normal operations and in the event of reasonably probable failures or malfunc-tioning of the ventilating,heating,pressurization,orothersystemsand equipment. If accumulation of hazardous quantities of smoke in the cockpit area is reasona-bly probable, smoke evacuation must be readily accomplished starting with full pressurization and without depressurizing beyond safe limits.

31.7 Pressurization
FAR 23.841 : Pressurized cabins.
(a) If certi.cationfor operation over[25,000feet]is requested, the airplane mustbe able to maintain a cabin pressure altitude of not more than 15,000 feet in event of any probable failure or malfunction in the pressurization system.
(b) Pressurized cabins must have at least the following valves, controls, and indicators, for controlling cabin pressure :
(1)
Two pressure relief valves to automatically limit the positive pressure di.e-rential to a predetermined value at the maximum rate of .ow delivered by the pressure source. The combined capacity of the relief valves must be large enough so that the failure of any one valve would not cause an appreciable rise in the pressure di.erential. The pressure di.erential is positive when the internal pressure is greater than the external.
(2)
Two reversepressuredi.erential relief valves(or their equivalent) to automati-callyprevent a negativepressuredi.erential that woulddamage the structure. However, one valveis enoughifitis of adesignthat reasonablyprecludesits malfunctioning.
(3)
A means by which the pressure di.erential can be rapidly equalized.
(4)
An automatic or manualregulatorfor controlling theintake or exhaust air.ow, or both, for maintaining the required internal pressures and air.ow rates.
(5)
Instruments toindicate to thepilot thepressuredi.erential, the cabinpressure altitude, and the rate of change of cabin pressure altitude.
(6)
Warning indication at the pilot station to indicate when the safe or preset pressure di.erential is exceeded and when a cabin pressure altitude of 10,000 feet is exceeded.
(7)
A warningplacardfor thepilotif the structureis notdesignedforpressuredif-ferentials up to the maximum relief valve setting in combination with landing loads.
(8)
A meansto stop rotationof the compressorortodivertair.owfromthe cabin if continued rotation of an engine-driven cabin compressor or continued .ow of any compressor bleed air will create a hazard if a malfunction occurs.

FAR 23.843 : Pressurization tests.
(a)
Strength test. The complete pressurized cabin, including doors, windows, canopy, and valves, mustbe tested as apressure vesselfor thepressuredi.erential speci.ed in Sec. 23.365(d).
(b)
Functional tests. The following functional tests must be performed :
(1)
Tests of the functioning and capacity of the positive and negative pressure di.erential valves, and of the emergency release valve, to simulate the e.ects of closed regulator valves.
(2)
Tests of thepressurizationsystemto showproperfunctioning under eachpos-sible condition of pressure, temperature, and moisture, up to the maximum altitude for which certi.cation is requested.
(3)
Flight tests, to show the performance of the pressure supply, pressure and .ow regulators,indicators, and warning signals,in steady and stepped climbs and descents at rates corresponding to the maximum attainable within the operating limitations of the airplane, up to the maximum altitude for which certi.cation is requested.
