LF - line feed- A format effector which advances the actlve
posltion to the same character position of the next line.
NAK - Negative acknowl~dge - A transmiss~on control character
transmdted by a recelver as a negatlve response to the sender.
NUL - Null - A control character used to accomplish rnedla-fill or
t~me-fillN. UL characters may be Inserted into or removed from
a stream of data w~thouat ffecting the lnformabon contmt Of
that stream, but then the addition or removal of these
characters may affect the information layout and/or the
control of equ~pment.
SI - Shlft-m - A control character whlch IS used m conjunction
w~thS HIFT-OLIT and ESCAPE to extend the graph~cc haracter
set of the code It may reinstate the standard meanlngs of the

SO - Shift-out - A control character which IS used in conjunction
wtth SHIFT-IN and ESCAPE to extend the graphic character
set of the code. It may alter the meaning of the bit
combinat~ons of columns 2 to 7 which follow it until a SHIFTIN
character is reached. However. the characters SPACE (210)
and DELETE (711 5) are unaffected by SHIFT-OUT. The effect
of this character when uslng code extenslon techniques IS
described In an IS0 Standard.
SOH - Start of heading - A transmlsslon control character used as
the first character of a heading of an informatton message.
SP - Space - A character which advances the actlve position one
character position on the same line. This character is also
regarded as a non-prlntlng graphic.
STX - Start of text- A transmlss~on control character which
precedes a text and which 13 used to termmate a heading.
SUB - Substrtuta character - A contrd character used in the place
of a character that has been found to be invalid or in error. SUB
is intended to be lntrduced by automatic means.
SYN - Synchronous ~dle- A transmiss~onc ontrol character used by
a synchronous transmiss~on system In the absmce of any
other character (idle condrt~ont)o provide a signal from which
synchronlsrn may be achieved or retained between datatermtnal
equipment.
VT - Vertical tabulation - A format effector which advances the
actwe pos~tionto the same character posrtion on the next predetermined
line.
