On the left side of EADI, an airspeed tape moves against a fixed pointer. An arrow points up or down to indicate that the airplane's speed is increasing or decreasing. The target speed is supplied by the MCP to the EADI symbol generator. This target is the MCP selected speed or the FMC target speed in VNAV. It is represented as a magenta index. If the target speed is off scale, the selected speed appears as a three digit number above or below the speed tape, depending upon current speed relative to the target speed.
