One of the pri mary fea tures of the
C406-N se ries ELT is its sim plic ity of op -
eration. As long as the ELT is locked into
its mount ing tray and the re mote switch
harness is at tached and the an tenna is
connectred, it will ac ti vate in a crash and
transmit a dis tress signal. Nei ther the
cockpit switch nor the ELT unit switch
can be po si tioned to pre vent au to matic
activation once the unit is mounted prop -
erly.
It also is de signed against hu man er ror
and mis use in re gards to au tomatic ac ti -
va tion. The unit ac ti vates only when se -
curely mounted in its tray and has pins
12 & 13 jumpered. The ELT can not be
accidently ac tivated by drop ping, rough
handling or dur ing ship ping.
When the ELT is ac tivated, the pres ence
of the emer gency swept tone and a flash -
ing front panel light in di cates a nor mally
functioning unit. The front panel light must
im me di ately be gin to con tinuously flash
upon ELT ac tivation.
Un der nor mal op er a tion the switch con -
figuration on your front panel is the down
position, read ing “ARM”. The switch on
the ELT unit will also be po sitioned down
to read “OFF”. Should an emer gency
arise to the de gree that you want to
manually ac tivate your ELT, re verse ei ther
switch so it is in the up (“ON”) po si tion.
Remember, that as long as the front
panel and ELT switches are in the
ARM/OFF po si tion the ELT will au to mat i -
cally ac ti vate on im pact.
If your ELT is ac ti vated ac cidentally,
you will need to re set it. Do this by mov -
ing the front panel switch to “ON”, then
moving it back to “ARM” af ter ap proxi -
mately 1 sec ond. You may also re set the
ELT at the unit it self by po si tion ing the
switch on the ELT up to “ON”, then back
down to “OFF” af ter ap prox i mately 1 sec -
ond.
2.2. Over all Func tions
Figure 2-1 shows the func tional flow for
the ELT. The ELT unit is con sidered to
be ei ther “AC TIVE” or in “STANDBY”.
“STANDBY” in di cates that the unit re -
ceives po si tion data but is oth er wise
inactive. Taking the unit from the
“STANDBY” to the “AC TIVE” state re -
quires a pos i tive switch tran si tion from
one of three sources:
· Panel Mounted Switch
· Unit Mounted Switch
· G-switch
Upon en ter ing the “AC TIVE” state, the
unit shall meet all the re quirements as
de scribed herein. To exit the “AC TIVE”
state and en ter the “STANDBY” state, a
“RE SET” con dition must be en tered. This
may be ac com plished in one of two
ways.
(a) The front panel switch may be tog -
gled from the “ARMED/RE SET” po sition
to “ON” and then back to “ARMED/RE -
SET”, or if the switch is al ready in the
“ON” po sition, it must be placed into the
“ARMED /RE SET” po sition.
(b) The ELT unit switch may be moved
from the “OFF” po si tion to the “ON” po si -
tion and then back to the “OFF” po si tion.
If the switch is al ready in the “ON” po si -
tion, it must be placed into the “OFF”
position.
It should be re mem bered that the ELT
cannot be “RE SET” from the op posite
switch po si tion if one of the switches (ei -
ther the panel mounted switch or the lo -
cal unit switch) re mains in the “ON”
position.

monthly test is rec ommended. The check
shall only be con ducted dur ing the first
five min utes of any hour UTC (co or di -
nated uni ver sal time), and re stricted in
du ra tion to not more than five sec onds.
