C.  The FD (flight director) switches, captains and first officers, are 2-position switches, OFF and ON. The ON position permits display of flight director computed commands on the respective ADI. Discrete signals are provided to the respective ADI and digital data is provided to the AFCS computers. A master light (MA) is located above each F/D switch to indicate which system (during slaved operation) is providing mode control.
D.  The A/T (auto throttle) switch has two positions, OFF and is solenoid held in ARM. The ARM position permits A/T control of thrust levers when compatible mode selection exists between the AP and A/T. The switch controls discrete circuits (Ref 22-31-01).

E.  The ALT mode display and control consists of the speed display window, the rotary speed control knob and the pushbutton C/O (change over), EPR (engine pressure ratio), SPEED, LVL CHG (level change), and PDC (performance data computer) switches. These controls and displays are used for AFCS system control. The data is utilized in digital format and used by the A/T system, (Ref 22-31-01) and the AP/FD systems. The switch legends use mode engaged digital data to operate the respective engaged (ON) legend.
F.  The HEADING display and concentric rotary selectors, BANK LIMIT/heading, provide AP/FD preset heading data. The smaller concentric knob selects the heading and the larger knob selects the bank limit. The heading control provides heading changes in degree increments. The heading data is in digital and analog format for use by the AFCS computers, analog format is used by the HSI's. The BANK LIMIT control is a five-position switch for selection of desired bank angle limit in 5-degree steps between 10 and 30 degrees. The bank limit feature is applicable to all modes except approach.
G.  The COURSE displays and controls provide VHF navigation course control for AP and FD systems. The left display and control knob interface with computer A and the captain's HSI. The right display and control interface with computer B and the first officer's HSI. The course data is in digital and analog format for use by the AFCS computers, analog format is used by the HSI's.
H.  The ALTITUDE display and control provides altitude data for use by AP/FD systems, altitude alert system and PDC system. The display readout is from 0 to 50,000 feet and is adjusted by the control knob in increments of 1000 feet with the knob in the normal position and in increments of 100 feet when the knob is pressed in. The display readout is 10,000 feet at initial system turn on.
I.  The VERTical SPEED (V/S) display and control provides climb and descent reference by synchronizing at point of mode engagement, or by adjusting thumbwheel control after engagement. The V/S can display between + 6000 feet/minute and - 8000 feet/minute in increments of 100 feet/minute above + 1000 feet/minute and increments of 50 feet/minute below + 1000 feet/minute. The display is blank when V/S mode is not engaged.
J.  The displays require no direct mechanical connection from the set knob to the displays readouts. Adjustment of the controls causes parallel data to be input to the MCP transmitter and output as serial data to a FCC. The serial data is processed in the FCC and transmitted back via the 429 bus to the MCP receiver to drive the magnetic wheel displays.

K.  Various pushbutton switches provide mode selection for the AP/FD systems: V/S - Vertical Speed ALT HLD - Altitude Hold PDC - Performance Data Computer LVL CHG - Level Change - Airspeed Hold HDG SEL - Heading Select LNAV - Lateral Navigation (when used) VOR LOC - VOR Localizer APP - Approach
The switches interface with the AFCS computers via digital data. Mode engaged digital data is used to operate engaged (ON) legend in the respective switch. Mode priorities determine whether a mode light is illuminated or extinguished. An illuminated mode light permits mode deselection, an extinguished mode light prevents mode deselection via the switch.

4.  AFCS Accessory Box
A.  The AFCS accessory box is mounted on the E1-3 shelf in the electrical and electronic equipment bay. The unit is a 1/3 ATR long unit which is retained in the rack by a camlock handle which engages in a rack-mounted adjustable swivel bolt. Electrical connections are provided by a DPX connector on the rear of the unit which mates with a rack-mounted connector.
B.  The unit contains numerous relays, time delay gates, a circuit interrupter and other components used for interconnecting the AFCS system.
