Examine reference line and ascertain that trip and date information appears as two pulses together at six places and that event marker is recorded as shown in Fig. 501.

NOTE:  Slight discontinuities in recording traces caused by turning power on and off should be disregarded.

Examine altitude line and ascertain that it follows simulated altitude change with a distance of approximately 0.74 inch from reference line representing 10,000 feet.

(c)  
Examine airspeed line and ascertain that it follows simulated airspeed with a distance from the reference line of approximately 1.75 inches representing zero and a distance from the reference line of approximately 1.97 inches representing 250 knots.

(d)  
Examine acceleration line and observe that it is normally approximately 4.27 inches from reference line and that accelerations introduce by tapping accelerometer in step

Examine heading line and check for correct recording as follows:
1) Ascertain that recorded headings of 0, 90, 180, and 270 degrees are


approximately as shown in Fig. 501. 2) Ascertain that 0-degree line is approximately 3.22 inches from reference line. 3) Ascertain that 90-degree line is approximately 2.76 inches from reference line. 4) Ascertain that 180-degree line is approximately 3.22 inches from reference line. 5) Ascertain that 270 -degree line is approximately 3.66 inches from reference line.

(f)  
Examine N-S bearing line and ascertain that it is in correct position for recorded heading.

NOTE:  The N-S bearing may be in either north or south position for headings of 90 and 270 degrees. The line should be approximately 2.7 inches from the reference line for headings in the northern sector or approximately 2.6 inches from the reference line for headings in the southern sector.

(g)  
Check that radio transmission (ATC event) signal is present.

Close door of tape magazine, turn knob to latch door, and turn takeup spool to tighten tape.

Without tripping ratchet, insert tape magazine into flight recorder unit and secure magazine latch.

Close door of light recorder unit, check that OFF light on control panel goes out and check that RECORDING HOURS REMAINING indicator on trip and date encoder panel agrees with hours remaining indicator on front panel of recorder unit.

Set flight recorder switch control panel to OFF position.

Disconnect pitot-static test set.

(21)
Turn off compass system.

Remove electrical power if no longer required.

FLIGHT RECORDER SYSTEM - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
EFFECTIVITY
Airplanes With Fairchild Digital Flight Recorder (DFR)
1. General (Fig. 1)
A.  One flight recorder system is installed in the airplane. The flight recorder provides a permanent record of airplane altitude, airspeed, heading, vertical acceleration, and radio transmission recorded digitally on mylar tape.
B.  Altitude and airspeed are obtained from synchro information provided by the digital air data computer. Heading information and heading excitation voltage are obtained from the compass system (Ref Chapter 34). A vertical accelerometer provides acceleration information to the recorder. Trip and date information and EVENT marking is provided by the trip and date encoder.
C.  The recorder is capable of recording: altitudes from 0 to 50,000 feet and 50,001 to 99,999 feet, airspeeds from 0 to 540 knots, heading from 0 thru 360 degrees, and acceleration from -4.3 to +6.3 G.The magnetic tape is 450 feet long and is drawn past the read and write heads at a speed of 0.36 inches per second. The tape has 6 tracks which are used sequentially. The tape repeats itself every 4 hours, 10 minutes, then is shifted to next track by an optical window and sensor. A total record time of 25 hours is on the tape when all six tracks are recorded. The process is then repeated maintaining 25 hours of recorded data.
D.  Flight recorder operation will begin as soon as one of the engines is operating and airplane electrical power is available to the circuit breaker panels. The recorder will stop whenever the airplane is on the ground and neither engine is operating. A failure warning light (test module) on overhead panel P5 provides indication of a flight recorder fault.
