The casting is shaped like a tube, with a rectangular mounting plate at one end, and a small chamber at the other end. The tube is threaded, and fits through a 3 inch diameter hole in the rear spar. An O-ring, washer, and nut fit over the threaded portion, locking the densitometer emitter in position on the rear spar. A stud at each corner of the mounting plate allows mounting of the densitometer electronics unit to the densitometer emitter.

The chamber contains the radioactive source holder, collimator, and switch and card assembly. The chamber has a cover which is soldered in position.

The switch and card assembly provide a means of detecting fuel leakage into the chamber adjacent to the radioactive source. If a leak occurs, fuel comes in contact with a block of fuel sensitive expanding foam. The expanding foam actuates the switch which sends a signal to the FQPU.
