ACARE has identified three key, stand-out
drivers to better target these priorities.
The first is education, because we need
highly-skilled, educated people to make
all these concepts a reality and we need
to attract the younger generations to our
sector. The second is identifying areas
for upstream research in order to create
breakthrough opportunities for the years
to come; and the third is of course, fuel
consumption and emission control ?
fundamental areas in which we aim to do
ever better.
This all has to be underpinned by the
notion of 搃ntermodality? making the
air transport system the global, seamless
system of systems I referred to
earlier, interconnected to other transport
systems such as trains.
How does SESAR contribute to
ACARE抯 long-term objectives?
SESAR, like Clean Sky, will contribute
to the achievement of the ACARE 2020
objectives and will develop solutions for
several of ACARE抯 High-Level Target
Concepts, particularly:
n Green Air Transport
n Highly Customer-Oriented
n Time Efficiency
SESAR, again like Clean Sky, represents
a host of technology studies aimed at
identifying and developing the solutions
capable of making the air transport
system more efficient and environmentally
friendly.
SESAR will develop a European operational
concept of operation, making
optimum use of the performance of
aircraft families flying in 2020. It will
prepare and execute the deployment of
this concept in several steps. SESAR
integrates the ground and airborne
dimensions. Beyond the reduction of the
environmental impact of ATM, SESAR
also addresses several performance
requirements of the air transport system
(e.g. capacity, cost, time efficiency, etc.).
Meanwhile, Clean Sky is focussing
on on-board solutions, and goes far
beyond what could strictly be termed as
ATM applications (e.g. energy systems,
eco-Design?, but naturally there is
a great deal of coordination between
the two projects: the most prominent
interfaces between SESAR and Clean
Sky are within the 揝ystems for Green
Operations/Management of Trajectory
and Mission?Integrated Technology
Demonstrator and in the central
揟echnology Evaluator? n

Aviation journalist Simon Michell looks at what can be done to ensure
that the level of traffic demand expected in Europe by 2030 is
catered for within the air traffic network.
Long-term solutions
to long-term challenges
In the summer of 2007 the majority of
forecasts for the global economy looked
very optimistic. Suddenly, however, the
rumbling US sub-prime market debacle
hit Europe, causing a series of bank failures
across the continent. The oil price
rocketed to $147 dollars a barrel, and
several European airlines, struggling with
their bottom lines, quickly found themselves
unable to stay in business. A
year on, the situation could not be more
different. Germany has officially accepted
that it is in recession and the United
Kingdom will soon follow suit. Businesses
are shedding jobs at an alarming rate and
disposable incomes have come under
enormous pressure, especially in those
European countries most heavily hit
by the crisis in the property market. Air
traffic growth trends have subsequently
had to be revised down as the relentless
rise in passenger numbers has come to a
sudden stop.
Perhaps there could not have been a
more confusing time to bring out a report
on European aviation growth, but as the
new 2008 Challenges of Growth study
points out, 揟he slowing of demand
growth during the turbulence of 2008
and the likely economic and business
difficulties of 2009 may buy a few extra
years to respond, but this will not allow
the air transport industry to escape the
five main challenges in the longer term.?
The report抯 authors take this one step
further by saying that this is precisely the
right time to bring out such a report, as a
