removed or any large gaps in time within
the same log book or between log books.
Know your inspection criteria and pencil
out an inspection time line from the in
service date. Compare that time line
against the actual log book sign off’s and
see if there are any missing inspections.
• Damage: Damage comes in many
shapes and sizes. Make an inquiry with
the NTSB for any incident or accident
reports on the subject aircraft, request the
337 package from the FAA and look for
any entries that are not as descriptive as
they should be.
• Completeness: Entries should include
part numbers, manual references, NDT
Reports, 8130 forms, and a descriptive,
well-organized typed account of the
actual work.
• Conformity: The log books should
contain all information required to insure
conformity with DOT and FAA
Regulations as well as the manufacturers’
recommended inspection program.
• Computerized Maintenance Program:
This should be checked against the actual
log books to verify that the information
that has been fed to the program is
correct and complete.
When you perform maintenance, alterations
or inspections, it is important to
make sure that you are provided all of the
appropriate documentation (337’s, NDT
Reports, Wiring Diagrams, Instructions
for continued Airworthiness, Engineering
Drawings, etc.) so that in the future you
will be able to service your aircraft
correctly. This information, when not
available, can cost you a lot of money. If
you are going to install some new radios
or an FMS you will need the wiring
diagrams to identify the currently
installed wires and transfer them to the
new equipment, otherwise you will be
reverse engineering the install and that
takes a lot of time.
The bottom line is take the time to
insure your log books are neat and
organized, that your service provider
supplies you with all of the backup
documentation for the work that they
performed, and your entries reflect the
actual work that was performed. You
can not have too much documentation!

DIRECT OPERATING COST
The DOC (Direct Operating Cost) used in
the comparison charts includes fuel
($3.00 per gallon), engine reserves (either
MSP or overhaul agency estimates) and
maintenance costs using information
gathered from operators. All inspection
estimates are based upon the aircraft
operating 400 hours per year and averaging
1.5 hour legs.

Some of the information is difficult to
gather and verify. Please let us know if
