Fuel/water samples taken from each fuel tank should be tested with a microbial contamination kit. Positive results for microbial contamination require action which can include a biocide treatment or physical removal of microbial growth from fuel tanks.
(3)
All instructions supplied with the detection kits should be followed closely. Variations in the fuel/water sample and the ability of the detection kits to consistently measure the level of microbial growth make it important to retest if a detection test shows microbial contamination. Do not compare the test results between the different types of detection kits.

D. Prepare to Do the Detection Test for Microbial Contamination
(1)
Clean the sump drain tool, container and fuel sample bottle with a solution of 1 part tap water to 3-4 parts isopropyl alcohol.
NOTE: This will help prevent the possibility of cross contamination when you take the fuel samples.
(2)
Clean the exterior area of the sump drain with clean, lint-free cloths soaked with a solution of 1 part tap water to 3-4 parts isopropyl alcohol.
(3)
Air dry the fuel sampling equipment and sump drain areas.
E. Collect the Fuel Sample
NOTE: Collect individual fuel samples separately from each fuel tank.
(1)
Make sure the sump drain container is clean and dry.
(2)
Get a water/fuel sample from the fuel sump drain (minimum of 1 liter).
(3)
Make sure the fuel sample bottle is clean and dry.
(4)
Pour collected fuel into the fuel sample bottle, making sure the fuel sample contains visible water (free water) and fuel.
NOTE: Do not add any additives, such as food coloring to determine the presence of water.
(5)
Write the date, time, aircraft number and fuel tank identification on a label on each sample.
(6)
Protect each sample from contamination.

F. Microbiological Detection Test
(1)
Test the sample within 6 hours of collection if possible, but no more than within 24 hours of collection.
NOTE: After you collect the test sample, any microbial contamination in the sample will start to die.
(2)
Use one of the approved test kits to test the fuel samples.
(a) Follow all instructions supplied with the test kit.
NOTE: Some test kits will not function correctly if fuel is tested. Even traces of fuel can coat the test slide and prevent the microbes from growing. Other kits can test either fuel or free water, but free water is recommended.
(3)
Use the data supplied with the test kit and analyze the level of contamination.
(4)
Record the test results.
G. Test Results
(1)
If the test results show the presence of microbial contamination, get a new fuel/water sample within 10-14 days of test results and repeat the microbial detection test with the same test method.
(2)
If the retest also shows heavy microbial contamination (as defined by the test kit), within 10 days after the test results, do these steps:
