PASSENGER CABIN LIGHTING - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

1. General
A.  Passenger cabin lighting provides illumination of the entire passenger compartment (Fig. 1). It also provides area lighting for entryways, attendants work areas, lavatories, and galleys. Passenger information signs, reading, and attendant call lights are also installed.
B.  The passenger cabin lighting is divided into seven sections.
(1)  
Passenger Cabin Illumination (Ref 33-21-03)

(a)  Compartment illumination is provided by fluorescent lights installed in the ceiling and sidewall panels throughout the passenger cabin. Incandescent lights installed in the ceiling panels provide subdued lighting.

(2)  
Reading Lights (Ref 33-23-0)

(a)  Reading lights are in groups of two or three. They are installed in the passenger service units (PSUs) and attendant service units (ASUs). Switches are located adjacent to the respective reading light on PSUs and ASUs.

(3)  
Passenger Signs (Ref 33-24-0)

(a)  Passenger information signs are installed throughout the passenger cabin in the passenger service units (PSU), lavatories, and attendants’ stations. Switches on overhead panel P5 in the flight compartment control the signs.

(4)  
Passenger Call Lights (Ref 33-25-03)

(a)  The passenger call system consists of lavatory call lights and passenger call lights installed near each attendants’ station. They are activated by the call switch on each PSU and in each lavatory.

Lavatory Lights (Ref 33-26-0)

(a)  Lavatories are illuminated with dome lights in the ceiling, and fluorescent lights adjacent to the mirrors.

Galley Lights (Ref 33-27-0)

(a) Each galley area is illuminated with fluorescent lights in the ceiling panels.

Passenger Loading Lights (Ref 33-28-0)

(a)  Door threshold, attendant’s stations, galley, closet lights and lavatory areas are brightly illuminated with incandescent and fluorescent lights. The lights are installed in ceiling panels.
C.  Controls for passenger cabin lighting are on the forward and aft attendants’ panels and the galley panel (Fig. 2). Lavatory lighting controls are within each unit.

PASSENGER COMPARTMENT LIGHTING - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

1.  General (Fig. 1)
A.  General cabin illumination is provided by fluorescent ceiling lights, fluorescent window (sidewall) lights, and incandescent night lights.
B.  Specialized cabin lighting is used for entries, galleys, lavatories, passenger reading, and passenger information sign.
C.  All lighting components are accessible and can be readily replaced without the use of special tools.
D.  The 115-volt ac buses provide primary power for the fluorescent lights and the 28-volt ac buses provide primary power for the incandescent lights.
E.  On airplanes with carry-all compartments, a new flatter PSU has been fitted to these carry-all compartments. Single louvered ceiling panels with one fluorescent and one incandescent light per panel are installed on these airplanes.
2.  Ceiling Lights (Fig. 2)
A.  The passenger compartment ceiling lights are comprised of fluorescent and incandescent light fixtures located in the curved ceiling panels. The fluorescent lamps provide either dim or bright general area illumination. The incandescent lamps are used for night lighting and/or standby cabin illumination in case of power loss to the ceiling lights. A typical double louvered ceiling light installation consists of an incandescent lamp, two fluorescent lamps, and a ballast per ceiling panel. On airplanes with carry-all compartments and single louvered ceiling panels, one fluorescent lamp is installed per ceiling panel. Ballasts are located between ceiling panels and mounted on brackets attached to cabin stringers. Each ballast operates the two fluorescent lamps mounted on the two adjacent panels. A single incandescent night light is also installed in each single louvered ceiling panel. The ceiling panels are hinged on their lower outboard corners and swing down for easy replacement of lamps or ballasts.
