Ground Handling Adapters
There are four places on the engine to attach the ground handling adapters. You remove the adapters from the cradle and install them on the engine. Two plates on the aft side of the intermediate case are where you connect the forward ground handling adapters (trunnion fittings). A clevis on each side of the low pressure turbine case is where you attach the aft ground handling adapters.
Bootstrap Equipment
The bootstrap equipment has the forward and aft bootstrap assemblies. The forward assembly attaches to the forward end of the strut. The aft assembly attaches to fittings under the strut. The bootstrap hoists and dynamometers are attached to the forward and aft bootstrap assemblies.
The bootstrap hoists are used to lift and lower the power plant and cradle and remove the tension load from the engine mount bolts before the bolts are removed. The dynamometers are used to monitor the force on the arms of the bootstrap equipment and that the tension load has been removed from the engine mount bolts.
Engine Cradle
The bootstrap assembly hoists are attached to the engine cradle. You must be careful to attach the hoists to the proper lug holes on the cradle.
NOTE: For the forward hoist fittings, as you look from the rear of the cradle, use the right holes when you remove the left engine and use the left holes when you remove the right engine.
NOTE: The inboard, aft hoist fitting on the engine cradle requires a special extension adapter to keep the hoist chain from touching the engine.
You initially raise the cradle and transportation stand together to let gravity align them with the engine. You then lower them and disconnect the cradle from the stand. You raise the cradle and attach it to the ground handling adapters.
CAUTION: MONITOR THE DYNAMOMETERS TO MAKE SURE THE FORCE ON THE ARMS ARE NOT MORE THAN THE LIMITS. THE LOAD ON THE FORWARD ARMS MUST NOT BE MORE THAN 10,000 POUNDS EACH. THE LOAD ON THE AFT ARMS MUST NOT BE MORE THAN 2,000 POUNDS. IF THE LOADS ARE MORE THAN THE LIMITS, DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE AND EQUIPMENT CAN OCCUR.
