The kapton-faced thermal insulation blanket is made of these components; a kapton film as a skin around the hot-side ceramic cloth and a cold-side fiberglass cloth that is stitched around the thermal insulation of different densities and thicknesses. The kapton film is the moisture barrier that is attached with adhesive to the ceramic cloth and the fiberglass cloth. The hot-side ceramic cloth is the fire barrier. The kapton film moisture barrier prevents the contamination of the insulation from moisture or fluid which can become less effective. The color of new kapton-faced blankets is a dark red.
The thermal insulation in the blanket protects the thrust reverser inner wall composite structure from the heat from the engine during normal operation and during a fire.
The blankets are removed and installed in a specific sequence or order. However, it is possible to remove and install some blankets without disturbing the other blankets.
The blankets are designed to overlap along joints and seams. Some blankets are designed to fit under another blanket. There are different blanket thicknesses and blanket overlap at the fastener locations. When the blankets are installed, there can be a blanket that must be install first before the next blanket can be installed. A large quantity and different kinds of fasteners are required to attach the larger blankets.

THRUST REVERSER SYSTEM -THERMAL INSULATION BLANKETS

The gaps at the edges of the blankets that are adjacent to the fire seals or some pressure seals are closed with filler and firewall sealant.

You must open the thrust reverser to get access to the thermal insulation blankets.
The kapton faced blankets have several configurations which have blankets of different weights, thicknesses, sizes and shapes which also changes the location, pattern, quantity and type of the blanket fasteners on the inner wall. The kapton-faced blankets are not interchangeable between configurations.
Do not step on the blankets. Cracks can form through the kapton film skin moisture barrier which will allow the contamination and loss of the thermal insulation. Loose thermal insulation looks like a gray-white powder that escapes from cracks in the kapton film and hot-side cloth.
Hot, high speed air from a missing borescope inspection plug can damage or erode away the kapton skin, the ceramic cloth and the thermal insulation. Blankets with limited amounts of missing kapton skin, cloth and thermal insulation material should be repaired or must be replaced. Temporary repairs are available for the kapton-faced blankets. Different kinds of temporary repairs are given for the size and depth of the damage to the kapton faced blanket. One of the temporary repairs attaches a sheet of CRES sheet metal to the surface of the blanket with the same fasteners used to attach the blanket to the inner wall. Other temporary repairs seal the surface of a damaged blanket with adhesive. A kapton blanket with a temporary repair must be replaced within the time limits in the AMM with a serviceable replacement blanket or a blanket that has a permanent repair.
