7.0  DOCUMENT USAGE AND DTR SYSTEM EXAMPLES

This section provides guidelines to assist operators in interpreting the information contained in Section 8.0 of this document.  Variations of the procedures shown, or new procedures that meet the requirements, can be used by operators.
NOTE:   Some of the examples in this section make use of phased inspections.  The FAA no longer allows this process to be used, but revising the examples to remove phased inspections was not done.
7.1  SSI Inspection Instructions
7.1.1  Special inspection notes are included in Section 8.0.  These notes discuss sound corrosion control practices, fundamental symptoms of structural distress, and the attention to detail which are hallmarks of an aggressive inspection program.  The effects of corrosion have not been used in the calculation of the inspection intervals for the structural significant items in this document.  It is impossible to forecast the onset or the degree of severity of corrosion in airplane structure.  These variables depend on the operating environment, the operator’s corrosion control program and the operator’s maintenance philosophy.  Each operator should review their existing maintenance program to include, as necessary, the data contained in these special notes.
7.1.2  To consolidate Structural Significant Item (SSI) inspection requirements by airplane zone, an SSI to zone matrix is included in each wing, fuselage, empennage and flap SSI section.
7.1.3  The illustrations included in each SSI section provide general location of the areas where SSI inspections are to be accomplished.
7.1.4  The SSI Inspection Instructions form provides a written description of the inspection options available to meet the required DTR.  In addition this form provides data to assist the maintenance planner develop job cards.  Information listed below helps clarify some of this data.

External Inspection - This term is used when there is visual accessibility to an area without detaching any parts from the airplane (such as access panels).  Access through hinged panels or doors having quick release devices such as entry doors and the air conditioning equipment bay doors retains the external classification.

Internal Inspection - This term is used when there is visual accessibility to an area only by detaching removable parts such as panels, fairings, lining, flooring, etc.

Manhour Estimates - Manhour and elapsed time estimates are included for gaining access to internal inspection areas and for accomplishing Non-Destructive Test (NDT) inspections. Estimates for accomplishing visual inspections are not provided.
