Off-wing engine testing in conjunction with engine maintenance may be conducted in basic, partial or complete EBU (QEC) configuration. If tested in partial or complete EBU configuration it will be necessary to simulate certain geometric and hardware arrangements of the strut and EBU as installed on the airplane. To satisfy this requirement, a test adapter will incorporate the structural frame system and strut configuration having flow lines similar to the airplane strut. It will also provide electrical and other service interface connections which are virtual duplications of the airplane strut geometry and configuration for such services. The adapter is attached and pre-rigged to the engine outside the test chamber in a preparation or engine shop; then the adapter, complete with load cell, is secured to a hoist monorail system. The entire assembly is then transported into the test chamber via the monorail.
Where there is a mix of engines in the airline inventory, it is economical to provide a test stand which is "neutral" to the engine type and customized for the specific engine with a "designed-to-type" adapter.

6.2 ENGINE INLET
6.2.1 Engine Inlet For Test Cell
Engines are normally tested with a special inlet flare or bellmouth. This device also incorporates total inlet temperature and pressure probes as required for the operation of the engine EEC system and engine performance determination. The engine may also be tested with the EBU inlet cowl.

6.3 COWLING
6.3.1 Engine Cowling for Test Cell
During testing, the engine must be equipped with fan discharge and core cowls. Flight cowls ("C" ducts and core cowls) or special test cowls may be used. Regardless of which cowls are installed, the airplane strut geometry, and cowl seal arrangement, cowl hinge configuration and geometry must be simulated to assure proper fit, aerodynamic flowlines and structural integrity. The Boeing cowl system is designed to provide cooling of the core area. Therefore, sealing and openings used on the airplane strut configuration must be duplicated on the test adapter to assure adequate cooling flow during test operation.

6.4 EXHAUST NOZZLE
6.4.1 Engine Exhaust Nozzle for Test Cell
The engine is usually tested with the EBU exhaust nozzle. This requires that the aft pylon geometry of the airplane strut be simulated.

6.5 ENGINE MOUNTS
6.5.1 Engine Mounts for Test Cell
The forward and aft mounts on the EBU are Boeing-furnished and may be used for "out of airframe" ground test. The test stand adapter must incorporate mating mounts, geometrically and structurally compatible with the EBU mounts in strict compliance with loading specifications. The loading at both forward and aft mount interfaces must be considered with respect to shear and moment components. It is preferred to use the same mount bolt hardware as used on the airplane to attach the EBU to the test adapter.
