Anything that may be taken or
placed on an aircraft as personal
belongings, baggage or cargo.
ground station
A location with radio transmitting
and receiving equipment capable of
two-way voice communications with
aircraft.
ground visibility
The visibility in a weather
observation reported by an ATC
unit, FSS, community aerodrome
radio station, an AWOS used by the
DOT, DND or the Atmospheric
Environment Service for making
aviation weather observations, or a
ground-based radio station operated
by an air operator.
gyroplane
A heavier-than-air aircraft deriving
lift from aerodynamic reactions on
one or more non-power-driven
rotors on substantially vertical axes.
hang glider
One designed to carry less than two
people with a launch weight of 45 kg
(99.2 pounds) or less.
heading
The direction in which the
longitudinal axis of an aircraft is
pointed, usually in true, magnetic or
grid degrees from North.
heavier-than-air aircraft
One supported in the atmosphere by
lift derived from aerodynamic forces.
helicopter
A power-driven heavier-than-air
aircraft deriving lift from
aerodynamic reactions on one or
more power-driven rotors on
substantially vertical axes.

helicopter Class A external load
One that cannot move freely, cannot
be jettisoned and does not extend
below the landing gear.
helicopter Class B external load
One that can be jettisoned, that is
not in contact with land, water or
other surface.
helicopter Class C external load
One that can be jettisoned,
remaining in contact with land, water
or other surface.
helicopter Class D external load
One with a person carried externally,
or any load other than a Class A, B
or C external load.
heli-logging
The removal and carriage of logs and
shake blocks by helicopter external
load means.
heliport
An aerodrome used for the arrival,
landing, take-off or departure of
aircraft capable of vertical take-off
and landing.
high level airspace
That at or above 18,000 feet ASL
within Canadian Domestic Airspace.
high seas
Any body of water, or frozen
surface, not within territorial waters
of any state.
hire or reward
Any payment, consideration, gratuity
or benefit, directly or indirectly
charged, demanded, received or
collected by any person for the use
of an aircraft.
identification plate
A fireproof plate containing the
identification information in Section
201.08 or subsection 201.09(2),
201.10(2) or 201.11(2).
IFR
Instrument Flight Rules. To be
observed when flying in IMC.
IFR ATC message
One that contains an ATC clearance
or instruction, a position report or
procedure related to an IFR flight.
IFR aircraft
One operating in IFR flight.
IFR flight
One conducted under IFR.
IMC
Instrument Meteorological Conditions.
Those less than the minima in
Division VI of Subpart 2 of Part VI
for VMC, in terms of visibility and
distance from cloud.
infant
A person under two years of age.
instrument approach
The orderly positioning of an IFR
aircraft from the enroute phase to a
position and altitude for a landing or
a missed approach.
instrument approach procedure
For an aircraft on an instrument
approach, one determined by the
PIC on information in the Canada
Air Pilot for an IFR approach to that
