Platinum Aviation operates as a Part 61
school. In just three years of business,
this facility has grown rapidly and
developed a reputation of quality flight
training. They only operate new aircraft,
including two Cirrus SR22s and an
SR20, and have plans to add two more
SR20s this spring.
According to the school’s founder
and director, Tina Oborny, “Our primary
focus is to provide superior flight training
with experienced and dedicated instructors
using new aircraft equipped with the
latest, top of the line avionics.”
Platinum Aviation has developed a
reputation for being highly qualified and
having strict proficiency testing procedures.
Both Tina and Chief Pilot Kerry
Hackney are FAA Safety Counselors.
Kerry is a NAFI Master Instructor and
Tina is Flight Instructor of the Year for the
FAA’s Southeast region.
Tina explains, “From day one we tell
our clients that our role is to make them
the best and safest pilot they can be.
After every lesson, we talk about things
that were unsafe. When they argue these
points, it demonstrates poor judgment
and we talk about how poor judgment

leads to more accidents than poor piloting
skills.”
Kerry adds, “We find the vast majority of
pilots want to be trained to our stringent
standards and appreciate our efforts to
make them better, safer pilots. Our clients
come to see that our name in their logbook
really means something.”
On the rare occasion Platinum Aviation
has to manage a difficult student, they have
a process in place that may even include a
call to Cirrus. “We start with having another
Cirrus Instructor fly with the individual for a
second opinion and we don’t hesitate to call
Aaron Wedge to talk about the situation,”
says Tina.
Tina and Kerry embraced the Cirrus program
from the start. “It’s well thought out. I
recommend using the post flight evaluations
and fully explaining the Manage/Decide level
of performance. That makes it really clear
whether a student completes the training up
to standards,” says Kerry. “When you show
a student specific standards, it’s hard to
argue. Either they handled the situation without
help, or they did not…it’s that
simple.”
Tina agrees, “Stick to the training guide.
I’d rather lose a client because they chose
to walk away than because they had an
accident.”

Meet Steve Noldin
Training Development
CIRRUS Flight Standards
and Operations
Steve is preparing for a trip to
Southeast Asia to train instructors
from the Civilian Aviation
Training Center in Hua Hin,
Thailand. He says, “It is my goal to
help them use Cirrus airplanes in
their training program for prospective
airline pilots.”
Training flight instructors is just
one of Steve’s responsibilities.
Since January 2006, Steve has
worked in Flight Standards at
