 E. Hot Water Ice Removal Procedure

 (1)  
You can use hot water at 180-200°F maximum tank temperature to remove ice and snow from the airplane surfaces when the ambient temperature is 26°F, stable or on the increase.

To prevent the water from freezing again, you must apply anti-icing fluid to the surface immediately after you remove the ice with hot water.

Add 10% glycol to the hot water tank. This will keep to a minimum the freezing of the remaining water in the equipment you used to remove the ice.

 F. One-Step Ice Removal/Anti-Icing Procedure

 (1)  
You can do the one-step ice removal/anti-icing procedure, with the deicing/anti-icing fluid heated to 180-200°F. Use this procedure to remove the ice and snow from the airplane when the temperature is below 28°F. After you use the mixture to make the airplane surfaces clear, the remaining fluid will give some anti-icing protection. If the material/deicing fluid that you wanted to remove freezes before it flows off the airplane, it shows that an incorrect mixture of anti-icing fluid was used. You must apply more anti-icing fluid to get more protection.

The fluid mixed with the water can be Type I deicing (ice removal)/anti-icing fluid, Type II, or Type IV deicing/anti-icing fluid. The holdover time will be longer with the Type II and Type IV deicing/anti-icing fluids. With each fluid, you must use the data that follows to find the quantity of fluid to use in the mixture:

 (a)  
The airline experience

 (b)  
The fluid specifications

 (c)  
The manufacturer's recommendations

 (d)  
The weather conditions.

 (3)  If you must remove more ice, or it is necessary to do the anti-icing procedure before the subsequent flight, do the full ice removal/anti-icing procedure.

 G. Two-Step Ice Removal/Anti-Icing Procedure

 (1)  
The two-step ice removal/anti-icing procedure is usually the recommended procedure when the precipitation conditions are continuous. The second step must be done no more than 3 minutes after you begin the first step. Do the procedure area by area if it is necessary.

The items that follow will have an effect on the holdover time you get after you do the anti-icing procedure:

 (a)  
The fluid that was used

 (b)  
The weather conditions.

Thus, you must do frequent inspections to see if it is necessary to apply more fluid.

If it is necessary to apply more fluid before the subsequent flight, do a full ice removal/anti-icing procedure.
