Chapter 4 - Climb, Cruise, Descent and Holding
Low Altitude Level Off
4.2 - Modified the section to more completely describe why the thrust may
remain in a thrust limit mode instead of the expected autothrottle speed mode
during the low altitude level off.
4.2 - Added a technique to help the pilot maintain airspeed control and
prevent excessive airspeed increase near the flap placard speed range.
Economy Climb
4.3 - Removed reference to flaps up maneuvering speed. The FMC does not
use flaps up maneuvering speed to compute economy climb speed.
Maximum Altitude
4.5 - Modified the description of "buffet or maneuver limited altitude" for
clarity.
4.5 - Modified section based upon a maximum altitude presentation given
during the Flight Operations Symposium in May, 2004. Expanded
information on maneuver speed, accurate altitude limits from the FMC, the
effects of bank angles and airspeed when operating at of near maximum
altitude.
4.6 - Added a discussion about the effects of turbulence when operating at or
near maximum altitude.

Step Climb
4.8 - Added additional variables that influence fuel burn during an enroute
climb.
ETOPS
4.14 - Removed sentence stating non-normal procedures are performed using
the standard non-normal checklist. Use of the NNC is expected any time a
non-normal condition exists.
4.14 - Removed information concerning electrical and hydraulic system
malfunctions. This is systems information which is contained in the FCOM.
Pilot and maintenance actions for system malfunctions prior to departure can
be found in the DDG, MEL, or airline equivalent. Pilot actions for system
malfunctions enroute can be found in the operators approved procedures.
Descent Constraints
4.17 - Removed note about use of the DES DIR function. Use of DES DIR
deletes constraints between the airplane altitude and MCP altitude only. This
function is explained more thoroughly in the FCOM.
Descent Rates
4.19 - Modified discussion on where the Descent and Approach Procedures
are started and completed to comply with revised normal procedures. This
change will appear in revisions to the FCOM during 2005.
Holding
4.21 - Clarified discussion about holding when holding speed is not available
from the FMC.
FAA Holding Airspeeds (Maximum)
4.22 - Modified table to match the FAA Aeronautical Information Manual.
Chapter 5 - Approach and Missed Approach
Instrument Approaches
5.1 - Removed discussion on where the Descent and Approach Procedures are
started and completed. This information is contained in chapter 4 and will
precede the revised Descent and Approach Procedures that will be issued in
revisions to the FCOM during 2005.
5.1 - Moved general information about FMC and instrument displays from
later in the chapter. This information applies to all approaches.
