article on the drawing results.

Support your union
Social Security – the debate is on
about privatizing portions of the
Social Security system. People are
already lining up. Based on the assertion
that it will help limit what they
have to pay, companies are lining up
in support (ref. Jan. 21, 2005 Seattle
Post-Intelligencer article titled “Boeing
in coalition that will help push for private
accounts”). The AARP is lining up
against the proposal. At our last Council
meeting, SPEEA entertained a motion to
oppose the changes. The Council Reps
decided they would like some more data
and, rather than simply being against
something, wanted to develop what they
would be for.
This is our nature and our greatest contribution;
we are the smart people who
like to fully analyze a situation and then
construct a positive solution that works
for everyone.
With apologies to Mark Twain, I believe
that the rumors of Social Security’s death
have been greatly exaggerated. I also
believe the data will set us free. My concern
is our constant concern – a process
that will affect us as workers is being controlled
by others with little to no appreciation
for our needs or perspective. We
need to get ourselves – our perspective,
our voice, and our expertise – into the
process to help it arrive at the best possible
solution for all stakeholders.
As mentioned in my last column, SPEEA
is focusing efforts this year on building
power, reinforcing our brand and negotiating
good contracts. Stepping into the
Social Security debate will help in all
these areas and will directly benefit our
members.
We know what we want – stable employment
with good wages, benefits and
retirement. And we know how we want
to get it – involve ourselves in any process
that will impact us and work with others
to make the best possible happen.
The bottom line is that there is a lot going
on these days, and too often the voice of
working people is not included where it
should be – and consequently – solutions
tend to work for corporations more than
they work for people.
If we want a balanced solution, we need
a union – and one just like SPEEA – one
that gets involved and, with members’
involvement and support, makes good
things happen.
Council Rep vacancies in Renton
Council Rep Lynda Maynard has
resigned her Council position
effective Jan. 26, which leaves
a vacancy for District R-12 (representing
Techs in the 4-81, 4-82 and 4-86
buildings).
Council Rep Ron Wodtli has resigned his
Council position effective Jan. 26, which
leaves a vacancy for District R-30 (representing
Profs and Techs in the 7-206 and
7-244 buildings).
If you reside in the R-12 or R30 districts,
meet the minimum one-year SPEEA
membership qualification and are interested
in serving your co-workers as their
union rep, please complete and return
your petition* by noon, Wednesday, Feb.
