• However, the members do not want to
give SPEEA all the tools it needs to be
an effective advocate for their interests.
• It was advised that SPEEA should
repeatedly report the difficulties in
influencing legislation with a neutral
political position.
SPEEA reports
President’s report – SPEEA President
Jennifer MacKay reported that China ultimately
won the Airbus order. The panels will
be built in Spokane and financial reimbursement
is not given until the entire plane is
delivered. The design contract was given to
India. MacKay was asked to sit on the Labor
& Advancement Skills Team and will report
periodically.
Executive director’s report – Executive
Director Charles Bofferding reported that
the Sound Transit appeal was denied. We
were informed that all property owners
within the 4.7 miles of this proposed track
needed to be notified.

Have you ever thought about taking
that next step in getting involved
in SPEEA? Find answers to your
questions at a special leadership training
Feb. 22 in Everett and Feb. 24 in Tukwila
at the SPEEA halls.
This training is ideally suited for those
interested in running for a Council
Representative position, however all
SPEEA members are welcome to attend.
Council Reps play a critical role in how
SPEEA operates. As elected leaders, they set
policy for the union and provide a two-way
dialogue with the members in their district.
Since each district averages about 200
people, a Council Rep is responsible for
monitoring a variety of issues – from union
governance to disciplinary actions or other
HR issues. As a result, they are the union
‘face’ in the workplace.
“We want to help people understand more
about the role and see the training as an
opportunity to show how members can
grow their leadership skills in many ways,”
said Mary Jo Shannon, director of training
and organizational development.
“This is another benefit of being in a union
- you can stretch your skills in ways that
you may not have the opportunity to in
your daily routine at work,” she said.
The workshop will cover:
• What’s involved in running for election
• What to expect if you are elected
• What are your responsibilities
• What happens in terms of training
• How to develop your district
• How to work with committee volunteers
• How SPEEA staff can help

Petitions will be available in March at
www.speea.org (see Council link).
• April 6 - Petitions, with signatures of at
least 15 members, are due.
• April 27 - Ballots for contested elections
will be counted
• May 12 - New Council Reps will be seated
• May 12 – Regional Council officers will
be elected at the Council meeting
Festival celebrates
the art of worker
culture
Using song, story, poetry, art, theater
and education, a weekend
festival will honor the past 100
years of the working class, Feb. 18-20,
at the Seattle Labor Temple.
You can join fellow artists, art lovers
and history buffs for this unique
celebration organized by the Pacific
Northwest Labor History Association,
RiseUp! Productions and the Seattle
Labor Chorus. The weekend will pay
tribute to the 100th anniversary of the
International Workers of the World
(IWW), also known as the Wobblies.
In addition to weaving in labor culture
from the past, the weekend will include
an ‘open mike’ concept where participants
can be on stage for five minutes
to perform a song, recite a poem, tell a
story, etc. The weekend will also feature
workshops on issues such as:
• Racism and labor
• Industrial poets
• Librarian as cultural worker
• Soldier as worker
The thread throughout will be how to
integrate songs, stories and ideas of labor
into today’s worker and union culture.
The festival will host singer/songwriter
