“Hold the Fort” on Saturday, Feb. 19.
This is a narrative of IWW history
in the Pacific Northwest, interspersed
with Wobbly songs as well as songs
written by O’Connor.
On Sunday, Feb. 20, the Seattle Labor
Chorus and Solidarity Singers will perform
the Wobbly Hymnal, followed by
a history of labor organizer/songwriter
Joe Hill, who was killed by firing
squad in 1915.
Registration for the weekend, which
starts Friday evening, is $50 with discounts
for retirees, students and low
income. Registration for one day only
is $30. Meal fees for Saturday and
Sunday are additional ($7 per lunch
and $12 per dinner). For more details,

Code of
Conduct
What a dilemma. Should I
abide by my own integrity or
should I agree to do something I feel questions it?
My manager informed us it’s time to sign “The Boeing Code of Conduct” again. I met
with him and voiced my displeasure about having to sign this again this year. I agreed
to this code when I hired into Boeing 25 years ago. I signed the code last year to help
repair the damage done to the reputation of Boeing by the actions of a few executives and
employees.
I try to be the best person I can, in everything I do. Once I signed the Code of Conduct,
it is my word. I took an oath when I entered the Army in the early 1970s. I didn’t have to
repeat my oath again. I don’t have to repeat my wedding vow every year.
Just after the New Year, we received a message from Mr. Stonecipher, with his comments
about last year and also what’s ahead of us. He challenged each of us to strive to improve
on any, and every thing we do. He asked us to be more efficient and figure out ways to
reduce costs to be competitive in the aerospace industry. I know of at least one way. Don’t
generate 159,000 more pieces of paper that someone has to keep track of just because
“other corporations do it.” I contend that a simple statement from our manager reminding
us of our commitment to the Code of Conduct would suffice.
I’m all for having new hires agree to the terms of the Code of Conduct, but to make all
employees sign this every year is wasteful. It diminishes the value of the code itself. Some
might say it’s just short of coercion. I can be disciplined up to and including termination
of employment if I don’t agree to sign the code again this year.
What a dilemma . . .

SPEEA targets member issues
in Washington state legislative session
With only 100-plus days in the
Washington State legislative
session, SPEEA has not
wasted any time. Kristin Farr, legislative
director for SPEEA, has already met with
more than 20 lawmakers to talk about
key issues.
The issues she’s covering are based on the
input from members, gathered in telephone
surveys last fall and other research
by the Northwest Legislative and Public
Affairs Committee (L&PA).
As Farr, L&PA members, labor delegates
and other members of SPEEA meet with
lawmakers, here’s a snapshot of what
they’ll talk about:
1) Protecting overtime pay – Although
changes to the Fair Labor Standards
Act (FLSA) to take away overtime pay
for certain workers passed at the federal
level, SPEEA will push to protect
affected workers through legislation at
the state level.
2) Health care costs – SPEEA members
don’t want health-care premiums
to continue to skyrocket. Farr said
the legislators are looking at ways to
control drug costs through volume
discounts (purchasing pools). SPEEA
will also join the push for all large corporations
to pay their “fair share” of
health care, instead of letting the state
pay the tab for the working poor.
3) Workers compensation insurance –
Farr and others will speak out on ways
to streamline Labor and Industries
regulations so that it’s easier for the
injured worker to collect what’s due.
4) Transportation – SPEEA continues to
work with officials in various groups,
including the Transportation Partnership,
to solve the region’s traffic congestion and
upgrade the infrastructure.
5) Offshore outsourcing – This continues
to be a high priority. SPEEA will
