He served as General Manager of Orbital Engine Company managing more than 200 people with an operating budget of $24
million to achieve the company’s goals. Mr. Southern has also held the position of Technical Director, Motorcycle Systems, at
Synerject, a joint venture between Siemens VDO and Orbital, in Italy. The first ever direct injection motorcycle was introduced
by the joint venture company under the guidance of Mr. Southern.
Prior to SMS, he served as the Chief Operating Officer of Seeing Machines. Mr. Southern brings a wealth of technology,
licensing, product specification, development and implementation knowledge to SMS. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering
degree and is also a member of the IEEE.
Colin McDonald, Company Secretary/Chief Financial Officer (CFO)
Mr. McDonald has more than 20 years of experience in finance and accounting. He has achieved significant corporate expertise
by serving at senior executive positions. Mr. McDonald has served as a Company Secretary and CFO at Visiomed Group
Limited (an ASX listed company).
He was involved with Mount Edon Gold Mines Ltd, when it transformed from an early stage company to a large producer
employing 120 people. His valuable experience in the financial management field would help in maintaining SMS’ financial
stability. Mr. McDonald is a Chartered Accountant and holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from University of Western
Australia.
Andrew Chilcott, Vice-President, Sales & Marketing
Mr. Chilcott brings his valuable experience in the aerospace industry to assist the commercialization of CVM™ technology in
the growing Airbus market in the Pacific and African regions. Prior to joining SMS, he held the position of Regional Sales
Director in Airbus. Mr. Chilcott has also served as Sales & Marketing Manager at Rolls Royce. He is from a Material Science
background and has also worked as Principal Engineer at Rolls Royce.
Alistair Lang, Head of Programs – Europe
Mr. Lang was an Air Commodore and completed a full career in the Royal Air Force as engineer officer. Prior to joining SMS,
he served at seven practical appointments on front line units in the UK and overseas. Mr. Lang held a series of staff
appointments, mainly concerned with the airworthiness and fleet management of fast jet aircraft. He attended RAF College
Cranwell, the RAF Staff College Bracknell and the Royal College of Defense Studies.
Duncan Barton, Business Development Manager
Dr. Barton joined SMS in early 2000 as a research scientist. He was initially involved in all aspects of developing the CVM™
technology, right from managing the first digital versions of the CVM™ Laboratory Kit to overseeing the early production
processes for the silicone sensors. Dr. Barton also led the team that developed the integral sensors used by Airbus in the
qualification of Glare®, a fiber metal laminate used extensively on the A380.
Prior to SMS, Dr. Barton completed his PhD in Atomic and Molecular Physics in 1999. He is a member of both the British
Institute of Physics and the IEEE, and is a Chartered Physicist. He holds a BSc (Hons) in Physics from University of Western
Australia (UWA) and a Master of Business Administration from the University of New England. Dr. Barton also chairs the
Executive of Convocation, and the UWA Graduates Association as Convenor of the Membership and Marketing Committee.
