monitored by 'critics' driven by a protocol stream and individual designers can engage in synchronous, distributed
collaboration. The ODJ interface provides access to tools such as SAM II and Select OMT professional. ‘Critics’
react to sets of keywords chosen to represent design intent which are detected and recorded in the SCIDS database.
Critics have been created which monitor designers’ actions against checklists generated e.g. by HAZOPS as well as
those created by design management. Case Based Reasoning within the AI domain has been evaluated with a view
to the ODJ acting as a memory prosthesis to facilitate this. The possibilities of using the WWW as a global
knowledge source has been explored.

Summary
The ultimate aim of this project has been the design and implementation of safer industrial engine control systems.
The project examined the use of Ladder Logic and Object Orientation in the context of reuse. It then decided to pursue
the issue of reuse via an examination of work on both design patterns and application frameworks, with the intention of
exploring the applicability of these in engine control systems. A prototype pattern-oriented programming language is
being designed and implemented. For a more detailed description see Patterns and frameworks in Chapter 10.

Summary
This was a short (16-month) project originally intended as the first phase of a three-year project. The objectives of
the project were:
· to define the major requirements for a safety-critical systems engineering toolset;
· to establish the applicability of methods, tools and integrated toolsets currently available, or likely to be
available in the near future, to the safety-critical systems engineering process;
· to establish suitable metrics for toolset assessment;
· to identify shortfalls in these tools and toolsets and recommend improvements, resulting in an initial SCSET
specification;
· to define a suitable test project.
The results of the project are described in The safety critical systems engineering process in Chapter 9.
