that I had made the final and that there was a
room full of people interested in hearing about
my work. Strangely, this calmed my anxiety
and allowed me to communicate my findings
confidently and effectively.
I believe that it is this type of pride, which
comes through the recognition provided by the
Young Stress Analyst event that helps to form
and shape the careers of young researchers in
experimental mechanics. It certainly did in my
case.
This year’s Young Stress Analyst
competition will form part of the forthcoming
Institute of Physics 7th International
Conference on Modern Practice in Stress and
Vibration Analysis, to be held at New Hall
College, Cambridge from 8-11 September
2009. The call for entries will be circulated very
shortly and I strongly encourage all interested
students to apply, but I also appeal to the
supervisors of budding researchers to put their

Young Stress Analyst
Competition 2009 BSSM publishes ‘State of the Art: An Engineer’s
Guide to Strain Measurement Techniques’
in association with Eureka Magazine
This spring the BSSM plans to release an exciting new publication
entitled: “State of the Art: An Engineer’s Guide to Strain
Measurement Techniques”. The aim of this initiative is to educate
and attract a new generation of engineers and scientists to the field
of experimental mechanics.
In recent years many traditional techniques have benefited
from improved computing power and advances in measurement
technology. Moreover, new approaches to strain measurement,
for example Digital Image Correlation, have evolved from new data
processing techniques. This new BSSM publication seeks to capture these advances
within an accessible guide, targeted at the non-expert.
The booklet is being produced in association with Eureka Magazine who will
distribute it directly to over 20,000 design engineers. It will also be published online,
where it will be electronically circulated to over 60,000 engineers and scientists. This
strategy provides access to a fresh group of engineers and scientists who will hopefully
be excited by the possibilities offered by modern experimental mechanics.
The BSSM will also distribute the booklet directly to its members and to universities,
where we hope to target both uninitiated and established practitioners, and promote
innovative research in our field.
The booklet is split into two sections. The first half (Techniques Section) contains
concise overviews of each of the major experimental techniques, which have been
written by BSSM members who are experts in the relevant fields. Two A4 sized pages are
devoted to each of the major techniques and include a summary of the basis for the
technology, a list of typical applications, important considerations and a short case study.
The second section (Sponsors Section) is given over to companies who, in return for
sponsorship for the booklet’s production costs, have been given the opportunity to
promote their technology and demonstrate the capabilities of their
equipment through accurate case studies.

FAM Webinar on Advances in Research and Industrial Application
of Experimental Mechanics
Early in 2008 the Forum for Applied
Mechanics tendered to its members to
organise a webinar on a suitable topic of
interest to the engineering community. The
BSSM was given this task and organised a
webinar that was held on 13th November
2008. The webinar was introduced by Prof.
Janice Barton (past BSSM Chairman) who
gave a brief introduction to FAM, the BSSM
and the speakers. The presentations given
were edited versions of two keynote
lectures by Prof. Margaret Lucas and Dr
Richard Burguete from the 2008 BSSM
International Conference on Advances in
Experimental Mechanics.
Margaret Lucas is head of the
Dynamics Group in the Department of
Mechanical Engineering at the University of
Glasgow and leads a research team in
Power Ultrasonics focusing on the design
of novel high power ultrasonic tools and
devices. Her research in Power Ultrasonics
has covered cutting of human tissue for
surgical applications, cutting of food
products, forming of metals and soft solids,
joining of similar and dissimilar materials,
and bacterial inactivation. Current research
projects include the design of ultrasonic
orthopaedic surgical devices, design of an
