and other planetary missions, ultrasonics in
metal forming processes and ultrasonic
cutting of food products. The presentation
provided an overview of some of the
different applications of Power Ultrasonics
covered by her research.
Richard Burguete has been an
engineering specialist in Experimental
Mechanics at Airbus since 1997 and he
was Chairman of the British Society for
Strain Measurement from September 2004
to September 2006. At Airbus, he is
responsible for the development and
application of a variety of experimental
mechanics methods including: Digital
Image Correlation, Moiré methods, Fringe
Projection, Electronic Speckle Pattern
Interferometry, Neutron and Synchrotron
Diffraction, Incremental Centre Hole
Drilling and other mechanical stress
relaxation techniques. These methods are
primarily used for the measurement of
deformation and strain during major
structural and minor component tests and
for the determination of residual stress. His
presentation showed that many
Experimental Mechanics methods are
being actively and routinely used to
advance the state of the art in Aerospace
Engineering. He demonstrated the
versatility and broad applicability of EM
methods and how they are used for much
more than material or structural testing to
assist engineers in developing a better
understanding, thereby allowing more
extensive optimisation.
The Webinar attracted 60 attendees
from 14 different countries, representation
being made up of 54% from the Americas,
25% from the UK and the remainder from
Europe and the Middle East. The spread of
organisations showed that the audience
was made up of approximately 60%
industrials and 40% with research or
academic functions. Feedback from
attendees indicated that the quality of
presentations was spread uniformly
between good, very good or excellent and
the seminar either partly or fully met the
expectations of all participants.
The technical organisation of this event
was handled entirely by NAFEMS and the
BSSM would like to thank the NAFEMS staff
Jo Davenport and Matt Ladzinski for their
extensive support in the preparation and
running of this event. As it was considered
a very successful activity by the BSSM we
will be looking to run similar events in the
near future.

 Graham Hassall, director of Dantec’s
Scientific Group, is delighted to welcome
new recruit Rob Wood to the UK team,
joining himself and Robert Jaryczewski. At
the age of 25 Rob joins Dantec in Graham’s
25th year of service with the company. Rob
studied at Loughborough University before
working for nCode International for 3 years
as an Applications Engineer, supporting the
sales of data analysis and fatigue software.
He will therefore be initially supporting our
solid mechanics product line which
includes full field displacement and strain
measurement systems through digital
image correlation.
 Dantec Dynamics are pleased to
announce the entry into service of its Laser
Shearography systems within the Royal Air
Force. These will be used to identify usually
hard to find structural defects and
weaknesses in aircraft components made
from composite materials. Specifically the
systems will be used to look for
delaminations and disbonds on the
rotodome of the sentry aircraft. This will
form a valuable addition to the in-service
evaluation of the RAF’s large aircraft fleet.
Dantec's Laser Shearography systems are
also being used successfully in the wind
turbine industry.
 Dantec supports Airbus: As part of
aerodynamic testing it is essential to
validate computational models of the
airflow with experimental results from wind
tunnel testing of scale models. The
challenge was to accurately measure the 3-
dimensional flow velocities around the
Fulbright Research Scholar
BSSM Member Marco Alfano has been
appointed Fulbright Research Scholar for
the academic year 2008/2009.
The proposed research project aims to
combine experimental measurements (e.g.
Digital Image Correlation) and
computational models (Cohesive Zone
Model) in order to investigate the fracture
process in
adhesive bonded
joints.
