engine nacelles with high spatial resolution
and close to the model surfaces. The
solution was to use a Dantec Dynamics 3D
FiberFlow Laser Doppler Anemometer
(LDA) system. The system was set up
outside the working section of the Airbus
wind tunnel in Bristol, UK.
 A continuous wave laser can now be
used with a Dantec Dynamics iNanoSense
camera to make successful PIV
measurements in liquid flows. We have
carried out measurements in our laboratory
and at customers’ facilities using a 10mW
Helium Neon laser and achieved
outstanding results using silvered spheres
as seeding particles. The images captured,
at camera frame rates that can exceed
1kHz, produce vector maps with
interrogation areas down to 16 x 16 pixels
with very few outliers. The system is quick
and easy to apply to flow facilities owing to

 Defects in composites are unfortunately
part of modern production, however
understanding these defects is the key.
Laser shearography allows fast 100%
inspection of composite parts, digital image
correlation (DIC) can then be used on
specific areas to assess the severity of found
defects through full field strain
measurement. This can create an
accept/reject criteria for production control.

Digitizer combines non-contact full-field
surface measurement with tactile online

measurement of optically hidden surfaces
as well as fast online-inspection of single
points and primitives, the GOM Touch
Probe offers a number of advantages for
the casting industry.
Ever more complex components, more
sophisticated technical requirements, new
materials and shorter product cycles pose
new challenges and tasks for the ceramic
industry as development times are
continuously being shortened. Optical 3D
measuring technology can provide
advantages in all stages of product
development of a ceramic product, e.g.
during tool and mold development as well
as during the production process.

Cardiff University have developed
techniques in conjunction with Physical
Acoustics Limited, to enable a wide range
of bridges and bridge components to be
monitored for damage. Monitoring
techniques have been developed through
laboratory and field investigations over a
ten year period. A particularly successful
technique, called “BOXMAP”, was
developed for more accurate source
location in steel box girder bridges. This
