 A. The system uses FQI probes, Compensator probes and Cadensicons within each tank to continuously measure the quantity of usable fuel in that tank. All interfacing and calculations are performed by the Fuel Quantity Indication Computer (FQIC). The accuracy of the fuel mass takes into account all errors, which include those that follow:
 (1)
 Attitude effects.

 (2)
 Fuel characteristics

 (3)
 System, manufacturing and component tolerances.


 B. Attitude Information
 (1)
 Effective pitch and roll for each tank, from any source, is checked to be within the following range:

 Pitch +/- 30 degrees Roll +/- 15 degrees

 (2)
 The effective pitch and roll is calculated from longtitudinal, lateral and normal accelerations as received from the ADIRS via the ARINC 429 bus. FQIC Channel 1 receives accelerations from ADIRU 1 and Channel 2 from ADIRU 2.

 (3)
 The effective pitch and roll is also calculated by the FQIC from points of intersection of the probes with the fuel surface, within each tank. A minimum of three probes, which are collinear, are required to calculate these angles.

 (4)
 The attitudes got from the ADIRS are always used in preference to those calculated from triangulation of fuel height. If the data from the ADIRS is not available or invalid (out of range) for ten seconds continuously, the attitudes calculated from the probe data shall be used. Default values are used for pitch and roll if three non-linear probes are unavailable. The default values are as follows:


 ON GROUND:  EFFECTIVE PITCH AND ROLL ARE 0 DEGREES
 IN AIR:  EFFECTIVE PITCH IS 2 DEGREES AND EFFECTIVE ROLL IS
 0 DEGREES  (NOMINAL CRUISE CONDITIONS).

 C. Fuel Characteristics
 (1) Density
 (a) In each tank the density of the fuel is measured using a cadensicon and this measures the tank only. The signals have a

 (b)
 The wing tank cadensicons are located in the inner cells and are used to measure that cell and also the collector cell. The outer cell also uses the same density source but is corrected for the difference in temperature.

 (c)
 If the cadensicon density signal is not available or invalid (uncovered or out of range) for 30 seconds continuously, a density measured from the compensator probe permittivity is used. If the compensator probe is also not covered or invalid then a default density of 0.7873 is used for the measurement of that tank.


 (2)
 Permittivity

 (a) The permittivity is measured using a compensator probe mounted in the cadensicon and an extension to a normal probe (CIC), they are used for the measurement of that tank only. The signals, Kt for the cadensicon and Kd for the probe, have a continuous 30 second historical average applied to remove fluctuations. The allowable range of permittivity is as follows:
 1.99 <Kd <2.26 1.964 <Kt <2.289
 (b)
 The wing tank compensators are located within the inner cells and are used for the measurement of that cell and also the collector cell. The outer cell also uses the same permittivity source but is corrected for difference and temperature.

 (c)
 If the cadensicon permittivity signal is not available or invalid (uncovered or out of range) for 30 seconds continuously the CIC permittivity is used. If the CIC probe signal is also not covered or invalid than a default permittivity is used for the measurement of that tank.

 

 (3)
 Temperature


 (a) The fuel temperature is measured for both outer and inner cells, but not for the centre tank. Two tank probes in each wing are used to measure the temperature; one in each collector cell (probe 2) and one in each outer cell (probe 13). These probes are fitted with matched pairs of diodes which are selected for improved temperature accuracy.
