Bend the tabs until these conditions occur: 1) The head tab is tightly against the bolt 2) The top tab is tightly against the bolt 3) The lower tab is tightly against the flat area of the nut.

 (g)  
Cut off the top tab to make it flat with the top of the bolt shank, if it is necessary.

 (2)  When you install a cotter pin in a rod or a pin, do these steps:
 NOTE: The procedure is the same for rods or pins (clevis pins

 or pins that have heads).

 (a)  See Figure 201 for the installation procedure. 1) Make sure the axis through the eye of the cotter pin is
 parallel to the shank. 2) Bend the tabs around the shank.

 3. Retaining Ring Installation
___________________________
 A. General
 (1)  
Always use approved retaining ring pliers when you remove or install the retaining rings.

 (a)  
You can compress the internal retaining ring until the two ends come together. 1) If you compress the retaining ring more than this, damage

 to the retaining ring can occur.

 (b)  
Open the ends of the external retaining ring a sufficient distance to permit the removal or the installation. 1) If you open the ends of the retaining ring open more than

 this distance, damage to the retaining ring can occur.

 (c)  
After the installation, make sure the retaining ring is in the correct position, and is not loose or damaged.

 (d)  
Replaced all damaged retaining rings.

 (2)  
Plain Retaining Rings

 (a)  
The plain retaining rings can contain small rounded edges on one side and sharp edges on the opposite side. 1) The rounded edges are caused by the stamping die.

 a) They are not beveled. 2) You can not put these rings in the beveled group.

 (b)  
Install the plain retaining rings only in the grooves with the square sides.

 (c)  
Install the side with the sharp corners away from the part(s) the retaining ring holds in its position. 1) This lets the side with the sharp edge push on the groove.

 (3)  
Beveled Retaining Rings (Fig. 202)

 (a)  The beveled retaining ring removes the end play from the part that it holds.

(b)  
One of the sides of the retaining ring has a 15-degree bevel.

 1)  This beveled side engages with the beveled side of the groove.

 (c)  
Install the beveled side of the ring opposite the part that it holds.

 (d)  
The beveled retaining rings must be used only in beveled grooves.

 4.  Tab Washer Installation

 A.  General
 (1)  
This procedure tells you how to bend the keys or the elliptical areas (single-hole or multiple-hole) of the tab washers.

 (2)  
A new tab washer can have a bend in a key by the manufacturer.

 (3)  
Only use the tab washers one time.

 (1)  Standard keys:
 (a)  
Put the keys at the largest possible distance from the axis of the part that you will lock.

 (b)  
New tab washers that have a key with a bend must have the necessary clearance from the adjacent surface (VIEW A). 1) You can bend the key to get this clearance.
