 b)  Shingling can be detected if the mid-span shrouds are visually inspected. Blades not involved in the ingestion event will appear normal. Shingling will always produce scuffs or scratches on the inboard or outboard sides of the mid-span shrouds, and will often chip the edges of the hardface on the contact surfaces.
 c)  Experience shows that fan blades do not shingle during normal operation. However, fan blade shingling has occurred during an ingestion event such as a bird, large amounts of show or slush or other large soft-bodied objects. Regular inspection for this condition is not required.
 WARNING:_______EAR PROTECTION MUST BE WORN WHEN YOU DO THIS PROCEDURE. A LOUD BANG-TYPE NOISE WILL BE HEARD WHEN THE BLADES FREE THEMSELVES. THIS CAN CAUSE EAR DAMAGE.
 B.  Procedure

 (1)  
Unshingle a fan rotor or free a locked rotor as follows:

 (a)  
Select a wooden pry bar of sufficient length and strength to apply a heavy force between the fan blades. A piece of soft wood approximately 2 x 3.5 inches (50.800 x 88.900 mm) in cross section by approximately 6 feet (1.83 m) in length is recommended.

(b)  
Insert the wooden pry bar near the mid-span shrouds between the shingled fan blades. Be careful to place the wooden pry bar flat against the blade leading and trailing edges and not set an angle to these surfaces. Placing the wooden pry bar in this manner will prevent bending damage. For a locked rotor, the pry bar should be inserted near the mid-span shrouds at any blade location.

 (c)  
Give the pry bar a quick pull to free the blades. A loud noise will be heard when the blades unshingle or unlock.

 NOTE: Use care not to damage the leading edge or trailing
____ edge of the blades when unshingling a shingled rotor or unlocking a locked rotor.
 (d)  If the first attempt is not successful, move the pry bar to improve leverage and do the above step again.
 NOTE: If this procedure is used to unlock a locked rotor,
____ lubrication of the mid-span shrouds is recommended per MAN-PW4000-1-92.
 (e)  
Make a visual inspection of the mid-span shrouds and the leading and trailing edges of the shingled blades for damage. Closely compare the position of the mid-span shrouds, and the airfoil leading and trailing edge shape to blades that were not shingled.

 (f)  
Make a visual inspection of the mid-span shroud contact edges and contact hardface surfaces for scrape marks and hardface chipping.

Shingled Blade Limits

 (1)  
Replace blades prior to next flight that show any mid-span shroud position change (AMM 72-31-02/401).

 (2)  
Replace blades prior to next flight where airfoil leading or trailing edge damage or deformation is beyond acceptable limits. If no airfoil leading or trailing edge deformation/damage is visible, replace the affected fan blades within 25 cycles (AMM 72-31-02/401).

 (3)  
Blades with mid-span shroud contact edge marks and/or shroud contact hardface surface damage can continue in service for 6 cycles. After 6 cycles, the affected blades must be removed for close-up inspection of the hardface. NDI of the mid-span shrouds is not required (AMM 72-31-02/401).
