Early 2008 "EUR0C0NTR0L estimates are that some 300 more movements a day, per year, due to VLJs can be expected in the 2008—2015 period," according to George Ranga, senior adviser to the EUR0C0NTR0L CND Deputy Director for Network Develop¬ment, speaking at the March 2008 UK Royal Aeronautical Society VLJ symposium.
VLJs pose a number of challenges for Europe's ATM community. If VLJ opera¬tions develop as many predict, there will be a dramatic rise in jet aircraft numbers flying from very small airfields, away from traditional route structures. But the per¬formance of these aircraft — in terms of speed and height — is less than commer¬cial jets or larger business jets. Although VLJs are equipped with sophisticated ATM systems, many will be flown by pilots who are not used to jets — and the speed of jet operations — and not used to flying in the
 
commercial aircraft environment. VLJs will be cleared to fl y at 41,000ft (though with typical air-taxi route lengths of 300—500 miles it is hard to see when most will have the time to ascend to this level). This will increase the workload of controllers.
THE EUR0C0NTR0L RESP0NSE EUR0C0NTR0L has set up a VLJ integration platform to discuss with all concerned bod¬ies — aircraft operators, Air Navigation Ser¬vice Providers, regulators — how these new aircraft are going to be safely integrated into the European ATM environment. 0ne key area of research has been to examine how VLJs, not equipped with aircraft col¬lision avoidance systems, will impact ATM operations in Europe.
EUR0C0NTR0L has also run extensive simulations of VLJ operations and their impact in terminal and en-route airspace, many based at their Budapest Research Development Simulation centre. Early

Though referred to as a Very Light Jet, the Phenom 100 has all the characteristics of the Entry Level category and therefore intro¬duces a new-generation jet into this segment. The aircraft has already been certified for single pilot operation - without operational restrictions - by Brazil's ANAC and the US FAA. The Phenom 100 was designed to meet current EASA regulations and was prepared to comply with upcoming Air Traffic Control requirements for the Single European Sky.
