1. This article presents a review of the method used to estimate
lateral collision risk in North Atlantic minimum navigation
performance specification airspace. The result is a risk
assessment model in which each lateral navigation error is
weighted according to the contribution it makes to the risk. This
applies to all types of error and the magnitude of the weighting
varies with the cause and size of the error. An analysis of the
lateral collision risk for the year 1991 is performed using the
model, showing the risk to be within the appropriate target level
of safety. The North Atlantic Systems Planning Group have accepted
this approach as the approved method of lateral risk estimation
for the North Atlantic region.
