Exams. Exams will be based on material covered in class. There will be no makeup
exams, and the midterm and final exam times are as dictated by the MBA
program office (see below).
Other homework. Reading and homework will be assigned for most lectures.
Unlike problem sets, the homework problems are not to be turned in, but of
course will be valuable in preparing for exams and cases. The assigned reading
should be done before the corresponding class session so that the student can
contribute and participate during class in a constructive manner.
Lecture notes are included in the coursepack available at the Co-op..
Laptops. I do not allow laptops to be used during class meetings. Due to wireless
networking, I have lost the ability to turn off network or internet access in class.
Surfing the ‘net, sending emails and IMs in class are distractions to me and to
students (the surfer/sender and others), and to me, that is too great a cost to
justify the use of laptops in class.
Texts. In addition to the case packet, there are two required texts for the course.
The first is Corporate Finance, by Ross, Westerfield, and Jaffe (Irwin McGraw-
Hill, 7th edition, 2005). I will post answers to the assigned problems from this
book. The second is Applied Corporate Finance: A User’s Manual, by
Damodaran (Wiley, 1999).
Grading
Grades will be based on a curve (i.e., a student’s rank among all students in the
course). The numerical grade will be determined as follows:
Cases: 10%
Group project: 15%
Class participation: 10%
Problem sets, quizzes: 10%
Midterm exam: 20%
Final exam: 35%
In addition to this straight calculation, there is one more way to get an “A” in the
course. Students scoring in the top 20% of all students (in both of my sections)
on the (comprehensive) final exam will get an “A” for the course, independent of
the scores on the rest of the requirements (as long as they turned in the cases and
project).
Additional information
Password-protected class sites will be available for all accredited courses taught
at The University. Syllabi, handouts, assignments and other resources are types
of information that may be available within these sites. Site activities could
include exchanging e-mail, engaging in class discussions and chats, and
exchanging files. In addition, class e-mail rosters will be a component of the
sites. Students who do not want their names included in these electronic class
rosters must restrict their directory information in the Office of the Registrar,

This schedule is preliminary and subject to change. The case due dates will be
announced in class, but are listed below when I expect them to occur. The two
rigid, definite dates are the midterm and final. As mentioned above, these are
out of my control. Readings from the Ross, Westerfield, Jaffe text, Damodaran
