Driven
to succeed
‘During my final years of school I
developed a strong interest in
automotive and considered
undertaking an apprenticeship as a
mechanic. However, I found that I
enjoyed the science and technical
aspects too much. I chose RMIT
because I’d heard it was number
one when it came to engineering.
‘My favourite course was vehicle
handling and control, which covers
more advanced aspects of vehicle
behaviour. The knowledge I’ve
gained from this course was valuable
throughout my studies, as well as in
my career so far.’
‘Spending time working for MAN in Germany as part of
my practical experience in third year was a major highlight.
During that year, I also took on a leadership role in the
Formula H program where we built a hydrogen-powered
prototype vehicle. Both experiences were very rewarding
and made me much more confident when entering the
workforce.
‘I am currently working as a design engineer for ARB
Corporation—an Australian company that designs and
manufactures 4WD products. I mainly work in fabrication,
which involves the design and testing of steel products
like bullbars, and includes physical testing, thorough FEA
analysis and, best of all, making prototypes.
‘In the short term, my goal is to work solidly for the next
three years, travelling each year in Australia or on short
overseas trips. After being a student for so long, the lure
of earning a consistent wage will keep me in the workforce
for a while! Eventually, I would like to work in engine design
and alternate engine technologies, or to research different
gaseous fuels (like hydrogen) or electric engines.’

BP067 Bachelor of Engineering
(Automotive Engineering)
Duration: 4 yrs FT or PTA
Years one and two are conducted at the City campus
and years three and four are conducted at the
Bundoora campus.
City and Bundoora
Automotive engineering is the application of
principles drawn from the sciences in order
to develop economical and sustainable
automotive designs or to solve automotive
problems. Encompassing complete car
design, automotive engineering is global in
scope and increasingly environmental in
outlook. The industry generates and applies
new technologies (e.g. hybrid power trains
and fuel cells) for the betterment of society.
The degree has resulted from demands from
the industry and students. It builds on a core
program of mechanical engineering and offers
specialist courses that enable a graduate to
be immediately industry ready. Reflecting the
increasing interaction between industry and
higher education, you may also have the
opportunity to take a one-year paid industrial
placement with associated academic credit.
Learning by doing
It is often beneficial to undertake paid work
in industry during your studies, either in
Australia or overseas. You will gain valuable
industrial experience, as well as a possible
topic for your final year project. A placement
may even lead to a full-time job upon
completion of the degree. RMIT will help you
to find placements. Some students are
currently in automotive companies on paid
industrial placement for one year.
Optional industry placement may increase the
time needed to graduate by six or 12 months.
In the final year of your degree, you will
undertake a major research project that is
either industry based or simulates a project
in an industrial situation.
