 C.  The ACARS system will operate either in the demand mode or polled mode. The pilot may also switch the system to voice mode and communicate with parties on the ground. Direct contact with a specific telephone number on the ground may be made. A two tone chime sounds through the aural warning system to alert the pilots to an incoming call.
Interactive Display Unit

 A.  The Interactive Display Unit (IDU), located on the aft electronic control panel, provides the pilot with the facilities necessary to enter text data such as departure station, destination, estimated time of arrival, flight number, and miscellaneous messages into the ACARS system for transmission to a ground station. The pilot may also address telephone numbers of parties on the ground with whom he desires voice communications, and manually switch the system from data mode to voice mode to speak.
 B.  The IDU performs all the mode control, data entry, message display, and message recall functions required for the ACARS system. The IDU has an interactive key touch system that enables full alpha and numeric data entry.
 C.  The IDU is 5.75 inches wide, 4.5 inches high and 6.5 inches deep. The IDU consists of a microprocessor, an oscillator/countdown, an LED memory circuit, a power supply, an interface circuit, a 118 row by 128 column LED array, and a touch panel.
Management Unit

 (1)  The management unit (MU), located on the E2-3 electronics shelf, is a digital data-link unit. The MU receives ground-to-air digital messages from the VHF transceiver and controls the transmission of the air-to-ground digital messages through the transceiver.

 (2)  
The MU meausres approximately 3.5 inches wide, 7.75 inches high, and

 12.5 inches deep. The MU is fastened to the equipment rack by two stainless steel hooks at the front and by the rack and panel connector at the back.

 (3)  
The MU consists of an aluminum alloy housing, a cooling fan at the rear of the housing, four plug-in type printed circuit board assemblies, and a power supply assembly.

 (4)  
A CU FAIL and a MU FAIL indicator light are located on the front panel.

 4.  Printer

 A.  The printer, located on the aft electronics panel P8, prints messages received from ground stations through the ACARS system. The printer is a microcomputer-controlled medium-speed, thermal printing device. Printer data output is provided in the form of alphanumeric, symbolic, and graphic characters selected in accordance with ASCII standards. Each character is dot-pattern printed on heat sensitive paper. Print speed is 160 lines/minute.
 B.  The printer receives 115 vac from the AC ACARS PRINTER circuit breaker on load control center P18-2.
 5.  Operation

 A.  The IDU provides the pilot a means of interface with the ACARS system. The control unit front panel provides the capability to enter text data including departure, arrival and ETA reports, and telephone numbers on the ground that the pilot may want to reach.
 (1)  
When data entry is required, a keyboard is displayed. The parameters to be entered are displayed above the keyboard along with the current data.

 (2)  
The value to be overwritten will be displayed in reverse video. Touching a different parameter on the display will cause it to change to reverse video, allowing its value to be changed.

 (3)  
The ENT button will enter the data and prompt for a new parameter entry if there is one.
