 10. Horizontal Situation Indicator (HSI) (Fig. 13)

 A.  The HSIs display IRS generated heading, ground speed and drift angle data. IRS failures cause DA, GS, and HDG VALIDS to fail and causes the NAV failure flag to appear. The HSI's are located on the captain's and F/O's instrument panels.
 B.  Indicator power is derived from the HSI and the D/A power supplies which operate from 26 volt ac sources. The HSI power supply powers the heading card, the course pointer and the heading select indicator servocircuits and servocircuits. In addition, 26 volt ac reference is supplied for the demodulators in the heading select and course indicator circuits.
 C.  The three-wire heading signal is applied to the synchro-resolver of the heading servo and is used to control the position of the heading card and the heading flag. The sine signal drives the card and the cosine signal, representing sensor excitation, is applied to the flag circuit. The flap circuit also monitors proper servo response, the heading source validity and the HSI power supply and power source. A synchro resolver output is available for a heading comparator system.
 D.  A three-wire signal from a course input or from a navigation source, representing desired track, drive the Course/Desired Track indicator through a servocircuit.
 E.  The drift angle pointer, the present heading and the waypoint bearing indicators are controlled from three-wire sources. The signals are converted to two-wire outputs through control transformers and to dc to drive the indicators through dc motors. For normal operations the control relays, K1, K2 and K3, are energized to allow the drive of the indicators. When the relay de-energizes, the drift angle indicator is driven behind the mask, the heading select indicator goes to the 180 degrees cage position and the waypoint bearing indicator is driven to the 90 degrees cage position.
 F.  Five solenoid operated indicators are installed in the HSI. Lateral (VOR/LOC or cross track distance) deviation controls the course deviation bar. TO/FROM is operated from the VHF navigation receiver or from another navigation source. The vertical deviation pointer indicates G/S deviation or vertical path deviation. The two flag solenoids monitor the deviation sources.

 G.  Three annunciators, VOR/ILS-NAV, MAG-TRUE and 2, 1, 3, are solenoid controlled and operated by external switching. The ALERT annunciator is a two-lamped indicator and illuminates when a waypoint change is impending in an associated navigation system.
 H.  BCD information, ARINC 561, is converted to a three-figure presentation for ground speed and a four-figure presentation for distance.
 11. Radio Digital Distance Magnetic Indicator (RDDMI) (Fig. 14)

 A.  The RDDMI's display magnetic heading supplied by the IRS. The HEADING failure flag appears on the instrument face if the IRS is off or the data displayed is invalid.

 B.  The RDDMIs are located on the captain's (P1) and F/Os (P3) instrument panels. Each RDDMI has three rear-mounted connectors.
 C.  The RDDMI is powered from a 26 volt ac power source. The power supply produces the AC and DC voltage to operate the heading servocircuit.
 D.  The RDDMI includes a servocircuit that drives a magnetic heading card and a flag circuit and flag the monitors the status of the magnetic heading source and the operation of the servocircuit. Three wire heading information is applied to a synchro-resolver which supplied an output to a demodulator and amplifier which drives the motor and card and repositions the synchroresolver rotor. An AND gate monitors excitation from the synchroresolver, proper follow up on commands by the servocircuit, dc from the power supply and the valid from the heading source.
