Three night vision goggle operations, or when operating heli-copters or powered-lifts, six night vision goggle operations.
(2)
A person may act as pilot in command using night vision goggles only if, within the 4 calendar months preceding the month of the .ight, that person performs and logs the tasks listed in para-graph (f)(1)(i) through (v) of this section as the sole manipulator of the controls during a night vision goggle operation.
(g)
Night vision goggle pro.ciency check. A person must either meet the night vision goggle experience requirements of paragraphs (f)(1) or (f)(2) of this section or pass a night vision goggle pro.ciency check to act as pilot in command using night vision goggles. The pro.ciency check must be performed in the category of aircraft that is appropriate to the night vision goggle operation for which the person is seeking the night vision goggle privilege or in a .ight simulator or .ight training device that is rep-resentative of that category of aircraft. The check must consist of the tasks listed in §61.31(k), and the check must be performed by:
(1)
An Examiner who is quali.ed to perform night vision goggle operations in that same aircraft category and class;
(2)
A person who is authorized by the U.S. Armed Forces to perform night vision goggle pro.ciency checks, provided the per-son being administered the check is also a member of the U.S. Armed Forces;
(3)
A company check pilot who is authorized to perform night vision goggle pro.ciency checks under parts 121, 125, or 135 of this chapter, provided that both the check pilot and the pilot being tested are employees of that operator;
(4)
An authorized .ight instructor who is quali.ed to perform night vision goggle operations in that same aircraft category and class;
(5)
A person who is quali.ed as pilot in command for night vision goggle operations in accordance with paragraph (f) of this section; or
(6)
A person approved by the FAA to perform night vision gog-
gle pro.ciency checks.

Revise Section 61.63 to read as follows:
§61.63 Additional aircraft ratings (other than for ratings at the airline transport pilot certi.cation level).
(a)
General. For an additional aircraft rating on a pilot certi.-cate, other than for an airline transport pilot certi.cate, a person must meet the requirements of this section appropriate to the additional aircraft rating sought.
(b)
Additional aircraft category rating. A person who applies to add a category rating to a pilot certi.cate:
(1)
Must complete the training and have the applicable aero-nautical experience.
(2)
Must have a logbook or training record endorsement from an authorized instructor attesting that the person was found com-petent in the appropriate aeronautical knowledge areas and pro.-cient in the appropriate areas of operation.
(3)
Must pass the practical test.
(4)
Need not take an additional knowledge test, provided the applicant holds an airplane, rotorcraft, powered-lift, weight-shift-control aircraft, powered parachute, or airship rating at that pilot certi.cate level.
(c)
Additional aircraft class rating. A person who applies for an additional class rating on a pilot certi.cate:
(1)
Must have a logbook or training record endorsement from an authorized instructor attesting that the person was found com-petent in the appropriate aeronautical knowledge areas and pro.-cient in the appropriate areas of operation.
(2)
Must pass the practical test.
(3)
Need not meet the speci.ed training time requirements pre-scribed by this part that apply to the pilot certi.cate for the aircraft class rating sought; unless, the person only holds a lighter-than-air category rating with a balloon class rating and is seeking an airship class rating, then that person must receive the speci.ed training time requirements and possess the appropriate aeronau-tical experience.
(4)
Need not take an additional knowledge test, provided the applicant holds an airplane, rotorcraft, powered-lift, weight-shift-control aircraft, powered parachute, or airship rating at that pilot certi.cate level.
(d)
Additional aircraft type rating. Except as provided under paragraph (d)(6) of this section, a person who applies for an air-craft type rating or an aircraft type rating to be completed concur-rently with an aircraft category or class rating—
(1)
Must hold or concurrently obtain an appropriate instrument rating, except as provided in paragraph (e) of this section.
(2)
Must have a logbook or training record endorsement from an authorized instructor attesting that the person is competent in the appropriate aeronautical knowledge areas and pro.cient in the appropriate areas of operation at the airline transport pilot cer-ti.cation level.
