Theory to Grip Taking
If ever there is a need to be in a neutral position before making a move, it is when taking
grips. One of the many advantages of the neutral position over the conventional student
position is that it’s a good grip taking position.
There has always been the tendency to backslide away from the grips you are trying to take,
and the more you reach, the more you backslide. The reason is obvious as you know how to
backslide deliberately. When your arms are pushed out in front of you they create lift
which in turn will push you back. Basically, taking grips involves arms and legs but the
amount is subtle and is more closely related to being in a neutral position then any other
move.
If formation skydiving is all about scoring points then it’s because the grips are taken to
complete a formation in order to score. But understand that grip taking is last in the list of
priorities.
The priorities of FS:
1. Be on Level: Fall rate issues, the biggest challenge in formation
skydiving
2. Be in your slot: Translate or rotate to get where you need to be, then stop
3. Get a grip: Pick up grips
4. Continue to fly: There should be no tension on the grips. When on grips you
should be in a neutral position and when the grip is released
you should be able to stay in position.

The aim of this lesson is to teach:
Grip Taking, Grip Presentation with Level
Changes
Training Aids: The Coach, DVD, Video, Bean Bag, Jumpsuit and Altimeter,
Creepers, Mirror.
Revision: Read through the theory on Grip Taking and the priorities to FS. Also,
emergency procedures where appropriate.
Explanation: Explain theory to grip taking and grip presentation.
Demonstration: Demonstrate grip taking with emphasize on move, stop, and pick up
grips.
Imitation: Student to go through the planned dive sequence. Walk through
with you.
Practice: Practice the skill.
Practice with corrections until proficient.
Confirmation: Go through the whole dive sequence from exit to track off. Confirm
in air coaching signals and emergencies. Re-emphasize altitude
awareness and break off at 5000 feet.
Coaches Notes:
This lesson is not to be underestimated.
A common reason for students failing to score enough points on the FS1 qualifying dive is
due to not being on level when taking grips. As a skydive it is a realistic example of the
type of problems they will encounter when jumping with inexperienced FS jumpers.
Because the student needs to score points to pass this level, they may be tempted to rush
when docking. Re-emphasize remaining calm and the priorities of FS.

Ask the student which exit they would like to practice next.
Vary the exits from jump to jump.
Give the student time to adjust into the neutral position, ensure the student is in a neutral
position before attempting a new skill, they should be ready by the time you reach
terminal.
In Air Coaching
The skydive should be treated as a confirmation dive. The only new skill being practiced is
grip talking but in order to improve the student’s skill level, introduce small level changes
between each dock. Increase or decrease your fall rate to be on a different level to the
student then remain static. The student should apply the priorities of FS and get up or down
to your level before attempting to pick up grips or present grips to you.

Intro to Tracking
With the ever-increasing performance of canopies the need for horizontal separation on
deployment must also be ever increasing. The altitude in which we need to deploy must
also increase. To increase horizontal separation and deployment height, we need to
improve our ability to track.
Tracking for Survival
You have already demonstrated the ability to track, if you hadn’t you would still be on
student status.
How well can you track? You might be satisfied with your tracking but when you think
