The NOT ALLOWED indications may be displayed if an incorrect line
select key is pushed. In case of the call-up of a function, the acknowledgement is made by deletion of the star "*" next to the function name when the call-up is taken into account by the system. If the system is not available a message is displayed (PRINTER NOT READY).
C. Page Hierarchy The MCDU display consists of pages displayed on the screen. Each mode key has certain pages associated with it and each page has certain data available to it. The following figures are general diagrams that show the sequencing and the type of data on each page. Explanations of symbols used in these figures are defined in figure (Ref. Fig. 004, 005, 006, 007, 008, 009, 010, 011, 012, 013, 014, 015, 016)

-Any page accessing that is done automatically or by a LS key or mode key is shown in the following diagrams. If a page appears to have no exit route, a mode key must be pressed to change pages.

D. Data Entry
(1) Scratchpad and data field entry Data are entered into the computer through the MCDU keyboard. First the data are entered from left to right into the scratchpad by pressing the alphanumeric keys on the keyboard (similarly to a typewriter). Only 22 characters may be entered into the scratchpad. If more than 22 are entered, they are ignored and only the first 22 are used. The 23rd key press is not accepted by the computer and the computer gives no response. After entry of the data into the scratchpad, the data are moved from the scratchpad into the correct data field by pressing the adjacent line select key, and the scratchpad is blanked. The computer checks the data for format and acceptability (out of range, entry not allowed into the field, etc.). If the data are incorrect, the system leaves the previous data in the data field and displays the associated message indicating the error in the scratchpad. To enter the correct data, the pilot must do either of the following:
-Clear the message from the scratchpad by pressing the CLR key. The data that were incorrect appear in the scratchpad. The pilot can then correct the data or clear them out.
-Enter new data into the scratchpad. This automatically clears the message being displayed and replaces the previous (incorrect) scratchpad data with the new data.
If the entry is rejected because an incorrect line select key has been pressed, then the entry is accepted if the correct line select key is pressed. To clear the scratchpad of entered data or incorrect data, the CLR key can be used. One press of the CLR key erases the last character entered in the scratchpad. The same process applies if the CLR key is maintained pressed. Immediately the last character is cleared, after 2 seconds the entire scratchpad is cleared of any data. Certain data entries into a field also cause the displayed page to be changed automatically. In these cases, any scratchpad data is deleted. Otherwise, scratchpad data are retained when the displayed page is changed. During a page change, scratchpad entries are ignored.

Clearing data field Data fields on the MCDU can be cleared using the CLR key. Pressing the CLR key when the scratchpad is empty results in CLR being displayed in columns 6 through 8 of the scratchpad. Then, pressing the line select key adjacent to the data field results in clearing that data and the scratchpad line is cleared.
If the data have a default or computer-calculated value, the data revert to this value. If the default value is cleared the clearing has no effect and there is no message displayed. To remove a CLR prompt from the scratchpad, the CLR key can be pressed again once or any alphanumeric key can be pressed erasing the CLR in the scratchpad and entering the alphanumeric character. The computer must distinguish between the CLR key and C-L-R being entered into the scratchpad via alphanumeric keys.
