indefinitely, if the aircraft continues
to meet the conditions under which
the authority was issued.
Certificate of Airworthiness
Issued at the beginning of an
aircraft’s service, this remains valid
by proper loading, obeying the flight
manual, completing all scheduled
maintenance, complying with all
ADs, performing proper daily
checks (as per the flight manual) and
having all no-go defects rectified
before flight. It becomes invalid if the
aircraft is repaired, modified, and/or any of
its equipment or the airframe itself is
overhauled (Art 9). Otherwise, it is
issued for a three-year period.
Aircraft flying in UK need a C of A
from the State of registration, except
(when only operating in UK) for
kites, or balloons on private flights,
privately operated gliders (that is, not
on public transport or aerial work,
except instruction or flight testing in
club aircraft where the instructor and
trainee are members), aircraft with a
permit to fly (see below), or those
working under A and B Conditions
in Part A of Schedule 3, where it is
assumed that the aircraft is flown for
the purposes indicated (it also
specifies the performance group for
Article 36(1)).
A C of A remains in force for the
period specified, or until the aircraft
(or necessary equipment) is
overhauled, repaired or modified, or

equipment removed or replaced in
an unapproved fashion, or the
completion of mandatory servicing
or modifications. If it has been
endorsed by an ICAO state as failing
to meet standards at certification, the
aircraft concerned must have
permission from relevant states to
fly internationally.
Items to be checked regarding the
certificate before flight include
making sure the nationality and
registration match, as does the type
designation and serial number, the
date of issue, the signature and seal.
In UK, there are different types,
including Transport or Aerial Work,
Special Category or Private.
Permit to Fly
These are required to fly in situations
where the aircraft is still safe, but
there is no C of A, or it has become
invalid, such as when a maintenance
check runs out away from base and
you have to get the machine home.
It's more typically used for
homebuilts or ex-military aircraft.
Certificate of Registration
All aircraft must be registered, either
in their home, or a contracting or
foreign state. There are exceptions
for sales or test purposes (for which
you need a dealer certificate), but these
will not be for revenue flights.
An aircraft can be registered as:
·  a state aircraft, i.e. a civil one
owned and exclusively used by a
government.
·  a commercial aircraft, used for
commercial air transport.
·  a private aircraft.
In UK, the CAA is the relevant
authority, and maintains the Register
of Aircraft.
Generally, any citizen or properly
incorporated body of the
Commonwealth can be "qualified
owners", and registration normally
becomes void if an unqualified
person acquires a legal interest or
share. An 'interest' does not include
one to which you are entitled only by
being in a flying club, and the term
'registered owner' includes, for a
deceased person, his legal personal
representative, and the successor of
a dissolved body corporate.
You must inform the CAA of any
changes in the original particulars,
the destruction of the aircraft, its
permanent withdrawal from use, or
termination of a demise charter. If
you become the owner of a UK
registered aircraft, you must inform
the CAA in writing within 28 days.
Identity for Registration Purposes
Registration marks must be inscribed
on a fireproof identification plate
(metal is preferred), which must
itself be in a prominent position near
the main entrance (or conspicuously
fixed to the exterior of the payload
for an unmanned free balloon).
Plates must have at least the
nationality and registration marks.
When the plates are removed, the
aircraft officially ceases to exist.
Noise Certificate
All aeroplanes require a noise
certificate, except STOL aircraft (i.e.
those that need a TODR less than
610 metres on a hard level runway at
sea level in ISA at MAUW).
