you’re supposed to be (more or less)
and can act accordingly. Then there
are forced landings, where an
educated guess may be made as to
your position, followed by statistics,
and, finally, because the law says you
must, under certain circumstances
(International flights, for example,
always require a flight plan, as does
IFR flight in controlled airspace).
You should always file a plan as far
in advance as possible, but at least 60
minutes is preferable, with the
ATSU at the departure aerodrome,
but if there isn't one, you can do it
by telephone or radio (in that order)
to the unit designated to serve the
aerodrome. If there is a delay of
more than 30 minutes for a
controlled flight, or an hour for an
uncontrolled flight, you should
either amend the flight plan, or
cancel it and submit a new one.
If you land at an aerodrome other
than the one in the flight plan, you
must tell ATC within 30 minutes of
the ETA at the planned destination.
Here are the details for each slot:
Aircraft ID
The call sign. In the absence of a
company callsign, use the aircraft
registration.
Flight Rules & Type of Flight
The former goes in Box 8. V=VFR,
I=IFR, Y=IFR/VFR, Z=VFR/IFR
(enter the changeover point in the
route section). Where the change is
composite, (e.g. VFR/IFR/VFR) the
first takes precedence (Y).
Next is the type of flight. For the first
character use C=Controlled VFR,
D=Defence VFR, E=Defence
Itinerary, F=Flight Itinerary. For the
second, G=General Aviation,
Air Law 199
S=Scheduled, N=Non-scheduled,
M=Military, X=Other.
No & Type of Aircraft, Wake
Turbulence Category
Box 9 is also in two parts. The first
is the number of aircraft, which
should be blank for VFR.
Equipment
Box 10, for comms, nav and
transponder, in that order (COM,
NAV, SSR). N=None or
unserviceable. S=Standard, that is,
VHF, ADF, VOR and ILS.
C=LORAN, D=DME, F=ADF,
G=GPS, H=HF RTF, I=INS,
J=Data Link, K=MLS, L=ILS,
M=OMEGA, O=VOR, R=RNP
certified, T=TACAN, U=UHF,
V=VHF, W=RVSM certified,
X=MNPS certified, Y=CMNPS
certified, Z=other.
For SSR, N=Nil, A=Mode A,
C=Mode C,X=Mode S without
ident and PA, P=Mode S with PA &
no ident , I=Mode S with ident & no
PA, S=Mode S with ident & PA.
For example, SD/C is commonly
used for standard equipment with
DMA and Mode C transponder.
Departure Aerodrome
In Box 13, use the ICAO code.
Departure Time
Anticipated time in hours and
minutes UTC, over 60 minutes
ahead.
Cruise Speed, Altitude, Route
Box 15 is for the flight planned TAS.
N=Knots, M=Mach Number.
For cruising level, A=Altitude in
hundreds of feet ASL (e.g. A050). F
is for Flight Level.
Under route, include speed and
altitude changes, airway numbers
and waypoints on the route. DCT
(Direct) is assumed unless they are
included. IFR routes should be used
when available, as per IFR charts.
Destination, EET, SAR, Alternate
In Box 16, use the ICAO code. The
EET can include the number of
days. Use your own SAR time, up to
24 hours after ETA.
Other Information
Use 0 if you have nothing else to
add.
Supplemental Information
Fuel endurance in hours and minutes
goes in Box 19. Place an X through
the U and V if you do not have the
VHF and UHF emergency
frequencies (243 & 121.5 MHz).
Cross out the survival equipment
you don't have, and add with whom
the arrival report will be filed.
Finally, include your name and
licence number, and the person to be
notified if SAR is initiated.
NOTAM
A NOTice to AirMen is a temporary
warning or notice relevant to flight,
concerning changes to frequencies
or serviceability of navaids, or
hazards. They are in the list of items
to be checked before flight and can
be obtained by telephone, from an
ATC office or over the Internet.
Class I Notams are distributed
quickly over the AFTN (Aeronautical
Fixed Telecommunication Network – the
200 JAR Private Pilot Studies
equivalent of telex for aviation
organisations). Class II Notams are
less urgent and are sent by post.
A Class 2 Notam may confirm a
Class 1 Notam.
Notams do not amend the Air Pilot
(see below), but they may affect the
information it contains.
