In (real) low visibility ops and BELOW the DH - Go Around required if:
- AUTOLAND warning light
- N/W steering failed (CAT 3). CAT 2 manual rollout control with rudder
- AP off at touchdown (CAT 3) CAT 2 Manual rollout control with rudder
and N/W steering
- no FLARE indication on PFD at 30’ (CAT 3), CAT 2 manual flare and
rollout
AUTOLAND LIGHT
Comes on with RA below 200’ and:
- both AP’s fail
- both LOC transmitters or receivers fail
- both glideslope transmitters or receivers fail
- the two RA’s differ by more than 15’
- the a/c becomes too far off the beam (LOC or GLIDE)
UNSERVICEABILITIES
With MELs or in-flight ECAM actions check the required equipment table
in the QRH or the MEL text itself for low vis operations restrictions.
Engine out autoland can be completed to CAT 2 and CAT 3 SINGLE
criteria.
LIMITATIONS
AIRCRAFT LIMITATIONS - AUTOLAND
Maximum weight: 229,000 kg
HWC 35 kts
XWC 20 kts
TWC 10 kts (15 kts manual landing)
LOW VISIBILITY ADDITIONAL (PROCEDURAL) LIMITATIONS
HWC 25 kts
XWC 10 kts
If landing manually off an auto-coupled approach with runway not
autoland approved and/or only CAT 1 displayed on FMA, the AP must
be disconnected by 160’ HAT/RA
If landing manually off an auto-coupled approach with runway autoland
approved and at least CAT 2 displayed on FMA, the AP must be
disconnected by 80’ HAT/RA.
Autoland requires CAT 2 or CAT 3 (SINGLE OR DUAL) displayed on
FMA.
Where visibility permits – the Captain can disconnect the AP at any time
the aircraft behavior or performance becomes unsatisfactory. The
visibility determines if he can continue to land manually or must conduct
a go around.
CAT 3a allows for manual rollout control.
CAT 3b – automatic rollout control is required.
FURTHER AUTOLAND LIMITATIONS
CAT 2 – minimum design height 100’ AGL
At least 1 AP engaged in APPR mode at least CAT 2 displayed on FMA
(CAT 2, CAT 3 SINGLE or CAT 3 DUAL)
CAT 3 FAIL PASSIVE – minimum design height 50’ AGL
At least 1 AP engaged in APPR mode at CAT 3 SINGLE displayed on
FMA (CAT 3 SINGLE)
A/THR must be used in selected or managed speed
CAT 3 FAIL OPERATIONAL – minimum design height 0’ AGL,
minimum RVR 75m all zones
Alert height 200’ AGL
2 APs engaged in APPR mode and CAT 3 DUAL on FMA
AUTOLAND WITH UNPROTECTED BEAMS
Autoland to CAT 1 facility or CAT 2/3 facility with unprotected beams
allowed in weather equal or better than CAT 1 – with the following
conditions:
- airline checked the facility (beam quality, terrain effects on beam near
touchdown)
- pilot is ready to disconnect if beam fluctuations, aircraft tracking
problems occur
- at least CAT 2 displayed on FMA
- Low Vis procedures used
- go round required if wx unsatisfactory at CAT 1 minima
ENGINE OUT AUTOLAND
CAT 2 and CAT 3 fail-passive in CONF 3 only
Engine out procedures must be completed by 1000’ AGL

OTHER AUTOLAND DESIGN/DEMONSTRATED FEATURES (NOT
LIMITATIONS)
- slope 2.5 to 3.15 deg
- elevations below 9200’
- speed VLS + 5 to 15 kts
- demonstrated to MLW only (though certified to 229,000 kg)
- dry and wet runways (snow covered or icy runways not demonstrated)
- CAT 2 and 3 beams (no limit for CAT 1 beam with precautions above
taken)
PROCEDURES
GENERAL
Low visibility Procedures must be established by 1,000’ RA. Above this,
changing between procedures is OK provided that the necessary calls
and height checks have been done. Down-grading procedures can be
done at any time however changing from LOW VIS PROCS to
INSTRUMENT PROCS at low level is not recommended due to the
complexities of exchanging HEAD DOWN and HEAD FREE roles.
Captain must always be PF when low vis procedures in use. Low vis
procedures are always required when low vis weather exists.
Low vis approach is not to be commenced unless there is a reasonable
chance of becoming visual at the minima. Approach bans for each state
may also apply (see Jepps WWT or RMS).
Low vis procedures normally start at the IAF, the intercept of finals leg or
no later than 1,000’.
MINIMA REVERSIONS
An approach should always be flown to the lowest published minima for
which the aircraft serviceability will allow. Reversionary minima due
system failures, etc, should be briefed by the Captain.
CAT 2 approach requires:
- see lighting requirements above
- Braking action no worse than medium.
