assumption, investigations were focused
on the experimentations of Stereoscopic
3D visualisation and multi-media interaction
tools and techniques, including voice
and gesture interaction, for future
controller working positions. Examples of
investigations include experimental analysis
of controller抯 spatial memories and
depth perception in 3D environments and
the use of augmented reality techniques
for applications such as head-mounted
display of aircraft information in tower
control. One collaborative project, three
PhD theses, two Master theses and one
University study contributed to this strategic
axis in 2002.
Analytical studies in support of
ATM fundamentals
The major cause for delay in air transport
is assumed to come from operational
effects of uncertainty associated
with air traffic planning. These effects
are propagated downstream through
the network of adjacent sectors and
control centres and have a consequent
impact on controller tasks. Analytical
studies are aimed at analysing the different
uncertainty drivers from a scientific
perspective to provide a portfolio
of new scientific knowledge. This
knowledge can offer an insight to
enable better understanding of the difference
between prediction and reality,
and thus better control of the delay. In
2002, two internal investigations were
conducted as well as six graduate and
post-graduate theses and five university
studies.
ATM SUPPORT TO IMPLEMENTATION
The ATM implementation business
area provided simulation support to
the following simulations in 2002:
LINK2000+ real-time simulation
This project was a LINK2000+
Programme sponsored experiment to
evaluate the operational impact of the
LINK2000+ datalink services. The
general objective was to continue the
evaluation of a set of air/ground
datalink services that were considered
globally interoperable, conceptually
validated, and non-time critical,
and therefore most likely to produce
early ATM benefits. The experiment
confirmed expectations that datalink
has the potential to significantly
reduce voice channel occupancy.
Datalink also facilitated the transfer of
tasks from the tactical controller to
the planning controller subject to further
improvements in working
methodology.
Key studies focused on
improving visualisation and
interaction technologies for future
controller working positions.

The 6 States real-time simulation
This project focused on problems in
the busy airspace above Benelux and
western Germany. Growing traffic levels
and changes to large military training
areas necessitated the development
of a new route network, including
segregated arrival and departure
routes and a new sectorisation plan in
order to accommodate the modifications
for a safe and smooth implementation
planned for the end of 2003.
Oslo terminal area model study
Part of the EUROCONTROL and
NORSIM project, this study investigated
airspace improvements in the Oslo
TMA (Terminal Area) using the Total
Airspace and Airport Modeller (TAAM).
The purpose of the study was to optimise
the SID and STAR system, aircraft
flight profiles and identify clear vertical
separation between arrival and departure
flows, runway usage at Oslo airport,
the technical feasibility of producing
noise contours with the FAA抯
Integrated Noise Model (INM) using
TAAM output data.
Development of a help tool for
airspace design (HADES)
The goal of HADES is to provide assistance
to airspace designers by defining
interactively an airspace based on
a direct route structure to obtain an
efficient and manageable route network.
New European single sky initiative
by EUROCONTROL (NESSIE)
Closely linked to the HADES project,
NESSIE has been addressing developments
using the RAMS Plus fast-time
model to explore large scale modelling
of the whole of the ECAC airspace. In
conjunction with HADES, NESSIE will
provide facilities to examine changes
in airspace design in a European
context.
Transition to MODE S (TRAMS) ?
real-time simulation
The real-time simulation was sponsored
by the EUROCONTROL Mode S
Programme and carried out in partnership
with ENAV. Mode S is being
introduced in the central area of
