Astreet outside bustling slums
where traffic misses a bystander
by centimetres hardly
sounds like an exciting venue to
meet up with some ‘jetsetters’
who have their eye on the skies. But that’s
just the place for me to rendezvous with Jimmy
Wadia and Sean D’ Silva, members of
Aviation India, a group of planespotters and
aviation photographers.
They look around at Jari Mari, Kurla,
apologetically as they greet me. But that, I’m
informed, is the ideal location for planespotting
in Mumbai,where you feel as though you
can reach up and touch the underbellies of
large planes flying low just before they land.
D’ Silva, the 29-year-old founder of this
group, is a little apprehensive, though — not
because of the low-flying planes but at the
sight of the cops lurking nearby. After the
26/11 terror attacks last year, he explains,
this Mecca of planespotters has come under
a security cloud. Elderly people and children
used to sit around gaping at the planes flying
overhead but encounters with the police
have discouraged them, he says. Sixty-yearold
Wadia, who has been an aviation enthusiast
since the 1960s, agrees in a small but
resolute voice: “Planespotting isn’t the same
in Mumbai.”
Wadia’s romance with airplanes started
way back in 1964 when he picked up an observer’s
